I have a question about this force. Please forgive me if this has already been discussed. If it has, please post the link. Every time I go into the search area my computer freezes. Anyway,is this force easy to learn, and is it effective? Should I go ahead and buy the dvd or just download it from penguin magic? Any help would be great.
Thanks, Zack |

Classic force is not a sure fire way to force a card therefore I havent been very fond of it. If I do use the force and it fails I just do some other trick that doesn't require a forced card.
The best force in my mind is the riffle force. I even like using a short card for forcing and locating. |

The Classic Force takes time to master, but it's one of the best forces out there. Mastering it will help you to gain confidence in performing and develop your audience management skills. There are an endless number of sources for learning it however, dating back thousands of years (ok, not that long ago but you get the point). I doubt one could learn it just from watching a video tutorial over the internet. Paul Green has an excellent video on it. And of course books like Royal Road and Expert Card Technique have it. Whatever source you choose, be prepared to get out there and PRACTICE. That's the only way to master it.

Paul Green's Classic Force video is THE way to go for learning the classic force. It does take practice, lots of timing, knowing your spectator, but it is the best force out there.
Penguinmagic has also put up a downloadable instructional video on this, I don't know how good it is. And Paul Green's ways of dealing with uncooperative spectators, you have to see.

I second or third Paul Green's video. Paul's recommendation for a new card guy wanting to learn the classic is to have 2 or 3 good effects that don't require a force of any kind and perform them. Then when the classic works, go into the effect that requires a force. Good luck. Bob

Hi Zackary,
The Classic Force is a very strong weapon in our Magician's Arsenal. As far as literary resources, I would suggest Paul Gertner's "Forcing in a Classic Manner", The Eddie Tullock book, and Card College in addition to the sources listed above. My technique, as taught on my videotape, will allow you to develop your own personal handling. If you are unable to purchase the tape from your local dealer, please feel free to contact me directly for information. Thanks, Paul Green paulgreen@earthlink.net PS Thanks to Marko, Bobcape, & CLJ for your kind words about my tape. |

I agree that Paul green and Paul Gertner are the masters of the classic force. I Highly recommend their video and booklets on the subject. For me I had a problem if I missed the force taking the deck back and then respreading to have a selection made seemed not only unnatural but also tipped the fact they ( the Audience) clearly did not have a free choice. I solved the problem with an original force that feels like a classic and eliminates any pull back and respread of the pack. Guaranteed 100 % they can touch before the force or after the force. I only offer this as it seemed to be another option that fit this topic.

As with any trick if something fails, you should always have an out prepared ahead of time. In fact, I have several outs for the Classic Force. First, I always make a point to know the cards next to the forced card. If they get one of these cards, I’m all set to do some mentalist routines. Very rarely do they miss to pick one of these three cards. Still, if they miss all three I can jump into an ambitious card routine using that card signed by the spectator. If you worry about the three Ps (Preparation, Practice, and Presentation) you will never go wrong.

Here is a tip, if they miss the force and you don't want to take it back and try again, just underspread cull the card and go into the touch force,
Get Paul Green's Video, it rocks and has many good things on it. Edit: another tip, this makes the force 99.9% effective, but don't use it all the time.... Get them to hold something in their dominent hand and force them to pick a card with their off-hand. People nearly always take the force with their offhand. |

Paul has an excellent and informative video on the classic force, which I always recommend to my students who are in the process of learning the face up classic force used in my "Chicago Surprise." The psychology and timing are the important things, and Paul covers these extremely well.

You will not regret to get Paul Green video if you want to learn the classic force.
As a magician, the success of such force remains magicial feeling in my mind everytime when I use such force. You are always one step ahead of spectator, and that is real magic.

I hear Shoot Ogawa is coming out with a killer DVD on the classic force. I think it'll be sold at artfulmagic.com (I'm not sure of this, so don't quote me on it).

Years ago I learned the classic force holding the deck in my right hand instead of the left, thinking it would be easier to do since I'm right handed.. to my regret!
I decided to learn it correctly and purchased Paul Green's video. The video is beautifully done and easy to follow and learn the classic force! I agree with everyboby...he is the master of the classic force! Gerard |

People who know far more than I, including our hero, Paul Green, recommend Gertner's "Forcing a Card in the Classical Manner." I bought that little pamphlet before I got Paul's video and was sorely disappointed (perhaps an example of pearls-before-swine syndrome).
Anyone wanting to learn the classic force, as opposed to wanting to get that last 1%, is well advised to get Paul Green's video instead of the Gertner pamphlet if they have to choose. Here is a review of the Gertner pamphlet: http://www.magictalk.com/cgi-bin/reviews.cgi?read=367 By far, the video is the best bang for the buck of many a video. One reason for this, in addition to the instruction of a master, is the classic force depends on timing, and that is impossible (or nearly so) to teach in print. --Rick |

Hi,
Thanks to everyone for their kind words. I hope you are forcing away with confidence! I suggest that you obtain the Gertner booklet as well as the Tullock book. There is also invaluable info in the Card College series. The more you know about this "move", the more you can hone your skills. The tape is available through your local dealer, MagicSmith or from me. Thanks for your continued support. There is a possiblity that the tape will be converted to DVD. Nothing specific. Regards, Paul Green |
