Francis,
I would be curious to hear about any tricks you have done to help in character education. I'm always trying to promote and reinforce those positive character traits. When I do my sight word introductions the class builds the magic in my wand by reading all of the words already on our word wall and then I do the trick after teaching the new word. It keeps them completely engaged and excited in learning the new word and practicing the old words. For my teaching purposes,because I am not putting on a polished show or working as a paid performer, even the cheaper and/or amateurish tricks work like a charm when presented right. I am enjoying this thread as I am seeing a good variety of ideas/tricks I am not completely familiar with yet and am hearing how you in a familiar situation are also using magic. Jon |

I started telling them what army is about and asked them to find out more from parents and teachers (in Singapore, it is mandatory to serve army full time for 2 1/2 years). Another example is I use the coin appearing (wand or tweezer) in a game to introduce two phrases the children can use when they talked to their friends; "a penny for your thought" and "can I pick your brain"..thereafter , I would have the teachers to explain the two in greater details..more relevant to those of 4-6 of age. Just my two cents worth Francis

I second the hanky/mouse bit. It goves over great with that age. So does my balloon routine. Apart from that it is all stories and puppets for me.

I have to agree with the magician in trouble. The little ones love that. I get great mileage out of David Ginn's dog arm puppet. Also, the wacky washing machine by practical magic is a big hit with this group. Any kind of funny wands are great as well. Get em laughing and screaming and the parents will be happy. The goofier you are the better.
By the way, the coloring magic book is killer. I always use the routine by Silly Billy and it always kills. The kids love it! :) |

Frank;
I don’t understand it may be a trick that’s been around awhile; at five years old, the kid has only been around a few years and doesn’t know. If it was funny to a five year old ten years ago, it’s funny now. Not every magician is using the same ten tricks in every party in the country. A five year old will read the same book twenty times, why can’t he enjoy the same popular trick if displayed at his party and again at a friend’s party? |

I have to agree with Howie, Buzz, Dan and Leslie Nielsen. My 4 year old daughter has seen spongeballs probably 100 times. Still not sick of them. She loves silk magic, flower produtions... anything that is colorful and flashy. Over and Over again and again.
