Hey all!
I recently got started on a quest that isn't going as well as I hoped. I'm on a quest to create all coin working stand-up/walkaround set routines. The idea of performing with just a couple of coins on me is enchanting.. It's almost like perorming naked, which would be every close-up performer's dream I've gone back and forth gig to gig trying out a couple sets, but it just feels like it lacks some oomph.. I always end up breaking out the pack of cards and performing feats of paste board might. I suppose I lack material... But I feel that as much as coin magic can be commercial and workable, a lot of it can be magic for magicians as well, and can hardly be appreciated by laymen. So I turn to the coin men and women of this forum. Does anyone perform all coin sets for walk around? Any suggestions of routines I could include?

You should pick up Doug Brewer's book "The Unexpected Visitor". Or Eric Jones' DVD "Mirage Et Trois".

I do have mirage et trios. I feel like it's sill not enough..
I got three coins, they move around, now they're gone. Bye! Haha it's a great routine, but it's lacking something... Anyone have that problem?

Are you open to old school?
Coin magic today seems to be performed straight unto themselves - coins on coins alone like 3 Fly. Old school would utilize other props like silks, Lippencott for signed coin to box maybe, and my favorite is Dean Dill's matrix, but of course that requires a table and Okito boxes. So perhaps consider props to jump in with some coin routines. I know carrying more items may not be the ideal thing to do for this suggestion to your search. I've seen coins produced from a packet of cards. Maybe dive back into your copy of Bobo. Old is always New. Oh and look into Gregory Wilson for a 1 coin routine! Great for a warm up and introducing yourself with spectator involvement. The one where the coin seems to drop from thin air into the spec's open held together semi cupped hands. |

What is the oomph that you get from a pack of cards?
If you can define that then you could do any other magic that creates the same oomph.
The real magic is family!

A perfect response from the great Mr. Michael rubinstein! Thanks for that!
Well for my card routines I end with a souvenir to give, adds a good sense of closure to the set I suppose. Usually a good TnR or card to cigarette, or my ambitious card, changing the back of the signed card at the end. I suppose it's not an impact kind of oomph I'm looking for, but a well rounded and complete feel to a coin routine, that mr Michael has outlined. And to mr rkiew, much thanks as well. Very good points to ponder. Like they say, there's no school like the old school. Silks and wands are quite classy, any references you could give me? Might dive back into palms of steel, the Kam man has a couple in there if I'm not mistaken. Do you have trouble transitioning from "these coins" to "these other coins" mr Michael?

I've done nights of walkaround with nothing but coins, but I have to admit I had more than just two or three. What you want is a wide variety of effects and experiences. Have a bunch of effects that are fast, and some that are better slow. Some that are more funny than magical, and some that are the other way around. Use their coins as well as yours. Use the audience as the stage. At least try to cover the basic seven effects: production, vanish, penetration, transformation, transportation, animation, levitation, divination. If you can think of others, do them, too.
At some point, you're going to want something really stupid, just to get a laugh. Like the "Little Hand" or the Coin on the Forehead with the roofing nail, or Rune Klan's "Impromptu Hitman" from "Rune's World", where a coin and a pen both end up on your face. Karate Coin is funny and magical. Coin to impossible location is a tough one. But good ones are out there. I did what John Cox suggested--I looked at what sort of experiences I relied upon my cards to create, and found ways to achieve them with coins. If you can find my DVD "Silverado" there's a copper/silver transposition mixed with a bent coin climax. That's a great walkaround piece. If you're familiar with my stuff, then look up routines by Gregory Wilson and Rune Klan. Their work is great, and very different from mine. As you say, adding a prop can also broaden your repertoire. Consider having a handkerchief held out in front of you by two spectators, like a net. Lots you can do with that. Best of Luck

The coins to impossible location that I use is my nest of boxes routine from the latest set of NYCMS dvds. It used to be my closer until I added voodoo revelation from same set of dvd s. I have no problem transitioning from one group of coins to another. After the vanish I take out a purse...new coins. When I finished that trick, if I need other coins, I put the first purse away and take out another. However, in order not to raise suspicion, they need to be different type of coins. For example, one purse has three copper coins, for my twilight zone wild coin. Another purse my contain copper and silver coins for.my purse and glass routine. Another purse may have blank coins. You can switch your props if it makes sense to do so.

Sleightlysilas, You may want to look into a shell and C/S coin as well. Used sparingly, you can perform small miracles. Effect that happen in their hands, and as Curtis said, using thier coins can provide that oomph you're looking for. Some of the strongest coin effect at least for me have beeen Shelled coins across (Roger Klause's) and Cig-thru-quarter. I remember one night at a restaurant the 2nd table I performed Cig-thru-quarter. The lady (mother/wife) at the table, wanted to know how I did that with her quarter. The usual comments to "How did you do that" wasn't good enough. So she followed me to every table to see it again and again. Finally her husband came and told her. That her food was getting cold...lol

Always try and include tricks that involve the audience like Coins to the Spectator's Hand rather than a demo of Coins Across (even perfectly slick), or like a version of Silver Copper in the spectator's hand or, even better, Craig Petty's coins across between the hands of two spectators. Tommy Wonder Sock trick is fairly bold but it involves several members of the audience. So do his Counterfeit coins (a very nice routine for Spellbound)...
This is what people will remember as very magical after your show.

Lawrence hit it on the head. The reason card tricks tend to have a stronger impact is the audience involvement, Right from the start they are picking a card, maybe signing it. So now they are, at least a little, emotionally involved in the effect.
Most coin tricks are more of 'watch what I can do'. Find ways to make your coin magic more interactive...use borrowed coins? Have them sign the coin? Make the coins appear or vanish from their hands? Bob Elliott taught me a great lesson, during a routine, produce a half-dollar from a kid's ear...then GIVE IT TO THEM! Maybe not a good idea to do on 'Kid's Eat Free Night'. Bit you see where I'm going.
