Hey all,
I just received my Riser Shorty chop cup. This is truly a piece of art! From the weight of the cup to the special characteristics of the balls, this set will definitely get used. Many extras came with this set, making it well worth the price-tag. On the left is me stuck in a Don Alan mini, but still elated with the Riser. Anyone else use this cup? I would love to hear your experiences. Thanks, Jorey Posted: Mar 20, 2011 6:57pm Sorry, photo didn't arrive with first post

Yup - the Riser Shorty (aluminium) is my favourite Chop cup. I have several Chop cups, but this is the only one I use regularly.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Jim just finished a "innocent" shorty for me. It is a great cup!

If my memory serves me right, the Jim Riser website has a note to the effect, If I don't know you, don't bother placing an order. I only sell to pros, not collectors.
I've never called - and have had superb service by Donnie at RNT2 - so have a difficult time considering a Riser CC. What customer service experience have you had there? Hudson |

I use the Ultimate Shorty (copper). What a great chop cup. Every detail thought out, even the bag serves a purpose. And, it handles like no other - certainly never a need to bang the cup. My experience with Jim Riser has been outstanding, as well. I view him as a real pro making professional level props with real care, dedication to the craft and pride. He has treated me as a customer with genuine courtesy -- always. I believe he has been ripped off more than once, and clearly loves magic and doesn't want it readily disclosed, hence the note.

I've purchased several products from Donnie at RNTII and have gotten great service. I have my eye on a set of Monti copper cups
I wanted a high quality CC that was a little smaller then a full size Don Alan. That's why I went with the Riser Shorty. I also agree with Gary Dayton in his above post. There are things about the workings and craftsmanship of the "shorty" that I'm really impressed with. This is, without a doubt (at this point), my "go to" CC

I have 3 Riser Shorty chop cups. One being an innocent. It's amazing how hefty and solid they are. Not quite like any other chop cup I own. What I love the best is how they grab a tennis ball. There's just enough pressure to hold it in place until you want the ball to drop.

I think Roger Nicot's Demi Bar Cup is as good as the Riser Innocent, if not better. For one thing, if you are a bartender, this cup can legally be used as a shaker. It's certified by the state of New York for food serving purposes. It also comes with three balls of one color and one of a different, contrasting color, as well as a tennis ball, which is the load this cup was intended for.
It's also considerably less expensive than the Riser cup. It has been available for several years, but it hasn't been promoted as well as it should have been. In fact, this style of cup was very likely the inspiration for the Innocent Shorty.

Roger's Demi Bar Cup is amazing. I have 2 of them. Well, actually, I only have 1. I keep forgetting I gave 1 to Steve Brooks. It's so under the radar that even he didn't have one at the time. For many reasons, including those mentioned by Bill, this may be the best cc on the planet. The only negative thing is that there is no dimple on the bottom of the cup. Sometimes, as part of a ball vanish I drop a ball on the inverted cup. The ball sometimes slips off the cup. It also will not grasp a tennis ball in place like the Riser. Other than that it's the perfect cup. Also, a Stainless cup at that price is a steel (pun intended.)

Best cup I have ever owned. It feels great, works like a charm and looks wonderful.
I have had one for a few years and love it! I bought a back up too... |

Jim Riser's cups are really beautiful, I received two sets of Riser Standard Cups from him recently, couldn't bear to use them though my intention was to use one and keep the other.
The Bar Cup by Roger Nicot was my first chop cup that set me into performing cups tricks and thereafter collecting them. Its very functional and great for new user like myself (I have 2 of them). Strongly recommend them. They are available exclusively in Elmwood Magic. http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/full/Close-U......5952.htm Francis

Thank you gentlemen. I am humbled by your kind words and praise of the cup. I originally used a Rings & Things Chop Cup behind my bar, until a customer handed me one of my bar shakers and said "Now do it with this!" That was the nudge needed.... accompanied by the theft of the R&T cup. I make the "Bar Cup" from food-service grade Stainless Steel to look like a regular shaker... and it can be used as one as well. (Double duty)
There are some additions to the cup coming this summer! Stay posted to the Elmwood Magic site for updates. Also if you are attending the FFFF next month, you will find me behind the "Card-Shark" booth with Christian. Stop by and say "Hi!." Free Gummi Bears for all.... Thanks again! |

Just ordered the "BAR" cup on this posts recommendations. With a 3" mouth (same as the shorty), I'm sure I'll love it! I like the set-up of the shorty for the "shot glass" style routine. It'll be fun to have the BAR cup for a standard routine.

Just got my "Bar" cup. WOW! I love this cup. The shorter body makes the shot glass/silk phase much more workable.
VERY NICE! Jorey

First a confession... I'm the king of procrastination. I've been involved in magic (off & on) for about 18 years and about a year ago I purchased my first chop cup. Two weeks ago I purchased my 2nd - A Riser Shorty. I love it... the feel is fantastic. I had thought about purchasing the Innocent, due to the thought of it looking like a shaker cup. Now I see I'll be making an Elmwood purchase real soon for my 3rd...lol
Guess if I'm going to have an addiction, I'm glad it's magic. The buzz lasts longer, but not sure if it's any cheaper... |

As a long time aficionado of Riser cups, I couldn't agree more with your assessment of Riser cups. I think they are fantastic. That said, I think the aluminum one is the only Riser cup I don't have.

I'm surprised that there has been no mention of Riser's Shorty Junior chop cup. I own two with a mouth bead in heavy gauge, mirror polished aluminum, and two in copper. One with mouth bead and one innocent. You can see the relative size when compared to the standard shorty. It is larger than most mini cups on the market and can easily accomodate a 1 3/4" ball which is impressive enough to be seen. One of my all time favorite chop cups by far and comes highly recommended. |
