I was just on Madhatter site ordering some stuff and I noticed this book. I do not own it but am buying it because I have been told that, The 13 Steps to Mentalism is the bible for mentalism. I noticed that this book was $15.00! Now- I have no ties to anyone there- as I state all the time- if I see good deal somewhere- I post it- so here it is- Madhatter has this book and others being sold at wholesale prices! This is not a promotion- this is a fellow magician helping another fellow magician save some bucks! Hope you enjoy!

Hey! Whats' the big idea? Since when do we take that "Magicians Helping Magicians" stuff seriously?
j/k Thank for the info. It would be nice if authors bear the price of "13 Steps" in mind when they are deciding what to charge for their own work, i.e. "How much more valuable than Corinda is my stuff?" |

It doesn't mean its better than every trick in Corinda combined; but because its so rare the market forces drive the value of it up. Value is not decided by how good the trick is alone; its also decided by things like: - Is it a magician fooler? - Is it a totally new method? - Is it practical? - How many people know the secret? - Where can it be performed? All sorts of factors come into play when deciding the value of a trick; and comparing it to Corinda stuff is not a good measure. The first chapter of Corinda may be very useful, but it is also VERY common. Food is very useful, but here in the western world its very common, so it doesn't cost much. Something like a Showdown Wallet however is much harder to find; so it will sell for hundreds of dollars.

Yikes!
PLEASE tell me you're not dissing, Corinda, Theo...cause that would be...well.......really REALLY wrong. On MANY levels. Lots and LOTS of levels. RNK: It's the seminal work on mentalism, still cheap at ten times the price. I know some people differ...but it was, for me, both gasoline AND a blazing fire -- opened my eyes to mentalism as an art instead of just an offshoot of magic lit. No one book, magic or mentalism, I've read before or since has provided that kind of bare knuckles information. Mind you, it's nowhere near as valuable as a Showdown Wallet.......(drip, drip) David

Ebooks are taking over. I have a Kindle and paying $12.99 for a new release which use to cost $9.99. Half Price books sells for half cover prices.
Never thought I would like ebooks until I bought the machine. I love 13 Steps but it is nice to have it when I need it on the road. Im a hypnotist and I remember one stage hypnotist commenting how one of his suitcases was filled with nothing but books while he was on the road. Looks like he can cut back down on luggage now. Just my nickel. Decomposing

I don't think that Theo is dissing Corinda. He's right about the fact that the book, one of the best on mentalism ever written, has become widely available and almost generic. When the "Steps" first came out they sold for considerably more than today. Especially if you consider the difference in purchasing power between today's currency and that of the 1960's.
If Corinda's work were released today it would likely be selling at a MUCH greater price. So I'd have to disagree with the idea that the current price of "The 13 Steps" should act as any kind of guideline to new works released today. (Think about it - you can get "Practical Mental Effects" today for less than ten bucks because it is out of copyright and has been mass released by Dover. What would you have paid - in 2011 dollars - for a full file of the Jinx back in 1942?) Good thoughts, Bob |

Bob:
When I started in magic -- waaaaaay back in the 1980's -- I would NEVER have considered frittering valuable prop money away on books. (I am admitting to being about...umm...eleven years older than that now.) I now appreciate the value of a book. I actually readily admit that books can be of immeasurable worth....cause I'm old now. Maybe we are looking at this from two perspectives. Do I see as much value in a new wallet as I do in the 13 Steps? Nope. No way. Not even a contest. The fact that you can pick up this book at a number of places and/or at a low price doesn't disguise or denigrate the value of the information within it...or it's worth. Not to me, anyway. If you purchase a flawless four carat diamond for twenty dollars -- does that mean it's worth twenty dollars...or is it worth many many thousands of dollars...(as well as the opportunity to date a bunch of hot babes)? I remember reading the 13 Steps and seeing Osterlind and Sisti's DVD series based on it and being totally fooled by much of what I was seeing. I am a very savvy magician...so, trust me: the 13 steps IS a magician fooler. (The organic no-nonsense mentalism approach to accomplishing the effects still delights me.) Your book on Fundamentals taught me much more than I've learned from any of the excellent wallets I own. Thoughts taken from there shape much of the way I think about the way I present mentalism. What's more valuable? Becker's Stunners blew me away. And yet it is less than half the cost of a Showdown Wallet. So which has more VALUE? From my perspective: the BOOKS. Which costs more? The Showdown Wallet. What's wrong with this picture? That's what frosted my cookies...the notion that a prop could be considered inherently more valuable than a really good book, written by someone who knew what they were talking about. If I misread the post, I'm sorry. I think we are confusing value with price tag. To my mind rarity does not decrease VALUE...the rarity of the item has nothing to do with it's worth...one way or the other. It's worth what it's worth...and the 13 Steps IS a bargain at ten times the $15 cover price. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. How much would the 13 Steps be worth today? Andy Nyman just marketed a book. Was it $250? Think about it: if a new book came out with ALL the information in the 13 Steps AND if that was the first time all the mechanics were put together and laid out like that...how much would it be worth? How many THOUSANDS would people pay? There was a time when this information was anything BUT common. We live in an area where information is cheap. People don't respect it any more because they have invested nothing to get it. Too bad. David

David-
No, we're not looking at it from two different perspectives at all. I totally agree with you. I wasn't addressing the issue of the relative values between books and props. I was simply referring to the factors of widespread availability and the relative prices of books released today and those released decades ago. Good thoughts, Bob |

I once invented a trick, and then I found out it was already described by Corinda. Glad I had his book (yes, I bought this pile of paper), so I noticed that my original idea was very old fashioned.
From a historical point of view everybody who is into mentalism should have 13 steps on his book shelf.
