I have used Gerstner & Sons cases for 35 years and would not do without them. They "speak" class and quality. I receive many comments about them. Here is the one I am currently using for performances. I have a larger one at home that stores everything. I have the larger one divided into "shows", then empty that drawer into my performing case.

I shouldn't... but whenever I see all the displays of tricks in cases (and god forbid the youtube videos of kids displaying all the items in their close-up cases)
it kinda makes my stomach turn. I think the worst thing we can do for ourselves is to worship our props: buying cases, displays, etc. just so we can look at them, re-organize them, fiddle with them and rub them with a diaper to polish them. Sorry! I know they have a legitimate use, too. Back on topic...

I guess I just like organizing things. It's just one of those things I like doing that keeps me from going on killing sprees after a bad day. It's my medicine!

I am looking for a very versatile and professional close-up case. I don't mind spending the money for something really nice and useful. Does anybody have any thoughts based on that?

I or anyone has not idea what your props are, and what you need a case for. There are case for carrying props only to a gig. There are cases to work out of at a show. Strolling, I would think working out of the pockets or something attached to a belt so the props can be easily gotten to, to easily reach for the next item. I started this article for a case to carry many of your props to a show or restaurant so that additional magic tricks you know can be offered for returning customers and special occasions. I have had the manager come to me and instructed me to go to the party room and perform for a banquet table of people. So in that case, I could use larger props and longer routines. I have found the best case is one you can have an open top, which permits easy access to the props. It would set on the floor at an easy reach, for formal close-up presentations. A case like Meir Yedid Card and Coin Pouch is great for Strolling, with a small presentation. http://www.tricksupply.com/product-p/cardcoin.htm Some prefer the old Doctor Bag in leather, that worked great for the late great Don Alan. One case will not solve all your needs, you will most likely have several, as stated above for different shows or people. The late Jim Snapp converted an old Soda Cracker box to his close-up case. It opened on lengthwise, he had a handle attached to the top and had it sectioned off. He left the cracker box visible. It was an instant conversation piece and attention getter, as one seen anything like it, and wanted to know what was inside. Years ago I went to a Hair Dresser supply store and found a perfect curler case in black with a handle on top. Perfect for carrying Chop Cup and Cups and Balls with loads. This brings up another consideration, do you need to carry a close-up pad with you to present certain tricks. If so then what size and will it need to be in a separate case. Some magazine subscriptions give free nylon bags with shoulder straps if you subscribe for a year of their magazine. These are not overly large and is nice for doing magic outside on a moment notice. As you see, no one case will work for all people, it is what works for you and not everyone else. Not that it can work for many, but it is what you like. Not many people have the same taste. Remember you don't carry all your magic with you, just the magic you can do very well, or material and props you have created as an act. Good luck in finding your solution to your question. |

What I use for my close up case is an old vintage leather case that I bought from a thrift store ~8$, redid the interior with fabric and spray adhesive (10$) and added stickers to the outside (10$) and this is the result:
It works for me, I do children's magic shows. I'll even bring it with me doing a table hopping gig. Buy one that fits your needs/taste/style. If you have to make your own like I did, I say go for it. Click here to view attached image. |

Thank you, Bill Hegbli for your original post. Case is still available at link you provided and I was able to use a 10% off coupon. Free delivery so great looking compartmentalized case for $45! Just what the doctor ordered! Thanks, Bill!

You are Welcome poolside! The reason why I suggest this case is because when I was doing restaurant and bar magic, I always had extra tricks and routines to use if that night a lot of the regulars where there or the manage ask me to present a show for a private party in the back room. Other then this case, all my table hopping magic was in my pockets.
Let us know your thoughts on this case when you get it and have put your props in it. |

I saw Ali Bongo do a convention parlor show out of a large paper bag, which he put on the table next to him. I think he was trying to convey the idea that the props themselves were nothing special, and that he was doing the magic, not them. He also reached in and grabbed seemingly at random, muttering about what we should do next, which disguised what was, I'm sure, careful routining. Another advantage was that nobody on any side of him could look in and see what he might be doing by way of set up. Finally, of course, they're cheap. To me a doctor's bag looks like something out of the Exorcist, since real doctors don't use them now that they don't do house calls. But for some kinds of magic, that may be a plus.
