Greetings,
I will be doing a fete soon and using FP. My question is how safe is FP to leave in a sealed metal tin, in a car on a hot sunny day?! Many thanks, Danny |

The fact that flash paper, when shipped from the manufacturer, is packed in water, should answer your question.
Unless you want a MUCH larger flash (not to mention the kaboom and the flying shrapnel), I wouldn't do it.

Just keep it in your wallet. You will be fine, Cut little pieces and keep them in one of your pockets, Flash wont ignite just by getting a little hot, You need a flame, burning cigarette end etc to get it going. Plus when its old and dry it burns a lot slower.

Thanks Dai,
I use it pretty often anyway but I will have too much to hold in my wallet on this occasion. I was thinking have a stock somewhere I could go to to refill - like the car, but following the comments on this thread, maybe not. I might just limit the number of flash effects or maybe the organisers have somewhere shady I can put it. Danny |

Why not take a small cooler (6-pack size) with you. Put the supply of FP in there and put one of those plastic freezer thingys in with it to keep it cool.
That oughta work!

You are very welcome, Danny.
Plus, you can always throw a couple of cold ones in there in case you need it AFTER the show!

However if I'm doing a show, I keep some in one of those small plastic fishing lure containers (the small ones for hooks or weights) and keep that in my close up case. Never had any problems -Bobby |

It depends a lot on HOW MUCH you are carrying about. I would never, NEVER take more that what you expect to use at any one show. Store in a paper envelope and if you are going to have it in a hot car? Buy a small and inexpensive cooler. They stay remarkably cool inside and the paper will be fine and ready to use. The paper needs to be bone dry to work properly and well. If you think there is a chance of dampness at all throw in some decsicant stuff you get at Radio Shack.
Best,

By the by, if one thinks there can be paranoia about FP....I love one of my best friends when a case of it went up in his van and burned him to death. Granted: He had a dealers amount: 1000 sheets, open and he was smoking. But, flash paper is one of those things that you can easily get careless with.
One sheet? Magician in L.A. tosses out a large ball of 'fire'. He miscalculates. The ball is still burning when it hits the hair, heavily sprayed, of a woman in the front row. Here hair goes up like the open scene of Apocalypse Now. They get it out and basically she's ok. Her people sue the CITY of LA, the fire department, etc. Next, thing you know? Cops by the dozen...literally are raiding every magic shop in L.A. and confiscating ALL the Flash Paper and saying NO MORE.....still that way and it's been 20+ years. (Unless something has changed that I am unaware of....) Best,

Thanks guys,
I really like the cooler idea and the desiccant one is good too. I regularly carry FP in my wallet, but there is a big difference between some in the wallet and 20 sheets in the car At home I keep it in a sealed tin so that should anything untoward happen there won't be any oxygen (or I have just made a bomb...hmmmm) though paradoxically according to Scott Penrose the best way to keep it is in a cardboard box. Many thanks, Danny PS the beer in the cooler as well is inspired! |
