Show how a pendulum swings according to what they think. Let them keep the pendulum; you can make one from a length of string and a threaded nut or washer. That's real mental magic.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

Actually, is the class not on MAGIC? I recommend that you begin like any other teacher worth his or her salt: by first clearly laying out the expected learning outcomes. For example, what he or she wants the students to be able to do and what attitudes they will be expected to demonstrate towards the subject. I suggest that you write up the goals you wish to reach with this course and then decide which of your ideas, and those suggested here, will help you meet those goals. Cheers.

Another vote for a memory system: impressive, a genuine skill and for kids in education potentially quite useful.

Wow- why is everyone so edgy about a high school magic class learning some mentalism? I "got serious" about magic (and mentalism) at that age and if it wasn't for some well meaning "adults" who showed me the real stuff, I may have slipped into juggling... Or worse. Paul, Tarbell, has some nice pieces that you could start with. 13 steps has some some gems that are easy to dress up too. Just dealing with concepts and showing there use in a "mentalist" presentation goes a long way--the one ahead principle, nail nicking billets, and a key card as methods can lead to a wonderful variety of options. Like a quick Q & A, a living/dead test (obviously change the theme) and psychic card effects. Again presentation is the key, the methods are just tricks.

I call myself "Thomas Cooper" here because this stops the magic café appearing when people google my stage name.
Does anyone else find the term "Special User" to be a bit condescending? |

A young kid once performed the trick where he guessed in wich hand I held a coin, you know the method where he asks me to hold the fist with the coin against my forehead and concentrate while he is turned away?
I think he saw it in a movie, he performed it really well. That might be a fun thing to teach them? |

Take a look in the Mark Wilson course. He has a couple of simple but effective Mental effects that are well within the grasp of the beginner but do not readily lend themselves to the butchery of more sophisticated effects.

One more vote for magic squares and other math systems. Or MAYBE a really basic Magician's Choice?
