I have just been asked to do an hour long mathematical show for 12/13 year old kids, and the idea intrigues me. So I said yes. My idea is a demonstration split into three.
Part one will be mathematical magic, with the magic square a key part. Part two will be rapid calculations. I have been putting it on the long finger, but will now order Harry Lorrayne's book on the subject. Part three will be memory demonstrations. That's my thinking now, but I am open to any suggestions, insights or ideas. The more the merrier. Tony.

Tony,
I think you could probably close with the Magic Square, although it is good as an opener. Marc Paul has a good effect called Summing Up, which uses a nice principle for a prediction effect. Alex

Is the idea to explain the methods to the kids, or are you presenting it as a demonstration of mathematical wizardry, or both? This will influence the kind of effects you might want to include.

As a kid, I used to count the syllables in the teachers' sentences instead of listening to the content.

Let me add the classic "Reversal" and "One of those things" (Jinx #4) for the magic/mind reading part.
For the rapid calculations "A day for any date" is nice too. Interesting topic, Nico |

And the magic square, either as an opener or a closer, has to be there. I will be taking everything on board, and thanks for the input from everyone so far.

I am doing many Math shows. ( I have a dgree in Math and Computer Scince)
the mafic square is the perfect opener. Do it fast and they will love. The knight tour is better for adults or clever kids that can understand the effect. Lior

It is worth your while to look up the local mathematics curriculum so that you have at least a general idea of what the kids will know. Do they study geometry? algebra? probability? You will want to have a rough idea of what their vocabulary is like so that they can understand all the effects. e.g. I doubt that they will understand 5th and 7th roots. But they will understand squaring and cubing. They may or may not know how to multiply two binomials, etc.

I understand this is a summer camp for gifted children, so I hope there will be no difficulty with them understanding and appreciating stuff. If I get this show right I might try to develope it into a presentation for schools. I will be going back to the Martin Gardner books, all of which I had as a teenager. But my brother (a prober mathematican) stole them at some point. I'll have to get them back.

What about Marc Paul's "Human Equation"? You could open with the magic square and close with this routine.

For memory demonstration, check Georges St. James's Deep Sea Digits (Syzygy volume1 number 10)
For mathematical magic (magic square) : Chuck Hickok - Einstein's Demise (Mentalism Incorporated p.51) or his Diagonal Magic Square |

I can recommend SW Number Magic by Karl Fulves. Plenty of material in there, including classic puzzles.
