Hello All,
What sources would you recommend for a close up magician interested in learning some close up magic? I know a fair bit of card magic and have no interest in coin magic. I also do a sponge ball routine which is quite the killer. I am looking for a book or a DVD that teaches close up magic without the heavy use of gimmicks. Typically, I do strolling magic; however, I do plan to start doing some restaurant magic as the summer approaches. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mahucharn |

Darlys Foller Doller DVD and Mark Wilsons complete course in magic or what I suggest as a very good base for beginners and intermediate level. These do hold a amount of card work which is good and strong. There is also amount of coin work in both. I know everyone has what works for them but would be interested to hear why you have no intrest in coin work.
Other things that come to mind is Jay Sanky has a few DVDs covering importuned and tricks with every day things. Hope this helps as a kick of.
Enjoy your magic,

Thank you for your advice everyone, I think I'll look into the World's Greatest Magic series, as well as some of Gregory Wilson's stuff. Do you have any recommendations as far as handkerchief/magic with silks goes?

Let me clarify, the reason that I don't like coin magic is because my hands are too large to properly handle quarters, and half dollars are no longer in print (to my knowledge anyway). I love watching coin magic; however, I have found it impractical to perform for me simply because my hands are too large.

Half dollars are, technically, still being produced, but in small quantities. Nonetheless, you can get them fairly easily at banks, and I've found some by asking at post offices.
That aside, you might want to look into rope magic. It works great close-up and can be done for large audiences as well. Fiber Optics is a great DVD, and I've heard excellent stuff about the Encyclopedia of Rope Magic. Finally, as far as close-up as a whole goes, you can't go wrong with a set of Tarbells.

Mahucharn... with large hands go directly to US silver dollars... there is something so graceful about those that can manage such... I certainly wish that I could.
Good luck, Bruce |

Gregory Wilson's ring leader is very good (ring on rope) - also see my review of Thom Peterson's behind the curtain DVD, there are some gimmicks but most of the tricks would be fine for strolling/close up and a lot of them are not cards.

Lewis Ganson's 2 Volume set 'Close-Up Magic' has a ton of good stuff in it. Dated, but easily updated. A great resource.

Aldo Colombini has several DVDs on his web site that very good. A couple of them have a variety of effects a few are on one type of magic, ring and rope for instance. They're all $10 each and he may still be giving a free ebook with each item you buy. His stuff is very commercial and not to difficult.
You can also check out one of Jay Sankey's many DVDs.
