Hello,
I am starting to get comfortable with the basic coin technique from the first chapters of Bobo's but I'm having a hard time looking for a few simple tricks to practice simply because there are too many in the book! I know many of you know the book very well, could you recommend a few effects to me? If possible, there should be no sleeving or cuffing and also no gaffs, as I don't have any. Thanks!

Alessandro,
You might want to check out the Gadabout Coins (for a start)--no gaff required, and it's really fun! Regards, Tony |

Three and Three. It's a great basic coins across. Thieves and Sheep is another great effect as well. Have fun!

I second the Gadabout coins, however I found Dan Watkins handling a little easier.
Check out Dans website for lots of good coin info, especially the foundations section. http://www.coinvanish.com/routines.html http://www.coinvanish.com/video/stickycoins.wmv Enjoy ! |

Another good one is called "The Seven Pennies (or is it "Five Pennies")?".

Any of the "Coin Through Hand" handlings (bad magic pun) would be a good start as well.

Hi,
I started with Gadabout Coins, Winged Silver, and several of the coin classics, maybe coin through table. Good luck! |

I hope you fare better than me. I just got Bobos book too, and I am more of a visual learner I guess, because the written directions are taking forever to grasp.

I grew my magic teeth on books like Bobo's.
I still go back to it almost 30 years later. As far as visual learners, I probably own the fewest videos of any magician I know. When I do go to a video it is great to see instead of just read. There are benefits from the printed page. I will not go into them here. I grew up with books and am still an avid reader. If you have a c/s coin and want something nice to practice your Bobo Switch try to one called Presto Chango. (I hope that is correct. I will double check when I get home) The routine is very visual and "looks like magic" Email me at harris.deutsch@leesummit.k12.mo.us if it is not the trick where you have two silver then two copper than one each and end "clean". I usually sleeve the c/s at the end of the routine. Speaking of sleeves there is a great chapter on that subject. Someday I hope to add Topit Work to my sleeving. I hear they make a great combination. See August 2002 Linking Ring for my Nearly Normal Reverse Sleeving and an application in Tom Craven's Column. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but I would take a look at The Sympathetic Coins.

Paul Rosini has an excellent routine where you put a coin in your left hand. You reach into your coat and grab a pencil and use it as a wand to do a complete vanish of the coin. You then tap your hand again and produce the coin. It's titled "A Novel Vanish and Reproduction." Not too tough and a real fooler.

Another effect from Bobo's book that I'd like to put forward as a simple yet good effect is "The Magical Filtration of Four Half Dollars". I find that to be one of the best tricks in the book

Hi! I'm new to this forum and just beginning to learn coin magic, as well. This place is great - I feel lucky to have found it. These recommendations for beginning tricks are really helpful. I have been working on several of the sleights in the first two chapters of Bobo, and have been supplementing this with Daivd Roth's Expert Coin Magic Made Easy videos (first two vols). I find the video is a useful adjunct to the book, and Roth has some variations on sleights that are also good to know (like his approach to the thumb palm is slightly different--no pun there ). But your trick suggestions are good. I wasn't quite sure how to approach Bobo, as it is so large! Thanks.
