Here is the effect: The performer displays a 12-month wall calendar.
Each of the 366 days (Leap Year has been accounted for) has a single playing card assigned to it. No two days in each month has the same card assigned to it. So, for example, a month with 31 days in it contains 31 different cards. It is also pointed out that no one card appears more than once on any particular date. So the card that is assigned to the 15th of January is not found on the 15th of any other month. A spectator is asked to call out any date that comes to mind. Suppose the date in June 5th. Now, another spectator is asked to select a card from a shuffled deck. This spectator shows the selected card freely. It is, say, the Three of Spades. The spectator holding the calendar now opens up the calendar to June and is asked to call out the card that is assigned to the 5th. It is, of course, the Three of Spades!

I have been using this effect for years, and it is one of my favorites.

Funny how a few lines up from this thread is a request to contact Mr Cassidy, now I wonder why?

I received a review copy of a Date with Fate by David Devlin and have the following comments. The effect plays as is described in the begining of this thread. I enjoy mentalism with playing cards and like the fact this incorporates something different than one normally sees. The use of the calender I believe allows one to really come up with their own presentation and make it something the spectator will remember. The secret behind this effect is a very clever idea which almost makes the effect self working. In my opinion it will fool both laymen and magicians/mentalists alike. Devlin provides two variations and gives you everything you need to know to perform this right away in the 4 page download. This is effect is very very good and I recommend it.

I just read David's latest ebook and have to say that this is a very solid method for the diary effect. You receive a 4 page pdf document with clear and easy to follow instructions. The effect plays as is described in the advertisment.
What I like most about it: - You can check each and every day. No repetitions anywhere. No system detectable. - No memory work. - Uses a wall calender and might be therefore more vivid on stage. - Very easy to do. What I did not like: - The method is not that clean and hands off as some other methods, for example Colind McLeods' version. All in all I can recommend this ebook, which is available at http://mentalshocks.com/portfolio/a-date......d-devlin to everyone interested in diary effects and those who love to use cards in their repertoire and do not shy at using some sleight of hand. |

One thing nice about this trick is that the year does not matter, so the calendar can be used forever. Not only that, but you can use any calendar or even a date book, so it is suitable for both stage, close-up, or even walk-around. I am going to post a video demo of this soon.
