I just heard the news from Curtis' facebook. Bobby was a good friend of mine. The first time I met him at Zuke's magic shop, he fooled me numerous times, almost to the point of frustration. I also remember during that summer, my buddy Richard and I would hang out at Aron's (the restaurant where Bobby used to bartend at) maybe once or twice a week and the three of us would jam when it was slow and when it got busy, Bobby would introduce us to his guests at the bar and we would perform for them while they were waiting on their drinks. Definitely the best magic memories that I have.
RIP Bobby. |

Wow how sad. He was really amazing. I was lucky to see him a couple of times at the Hawaiian conventions. I remember being completely blown away by the magic that happened (or certainly seemed to happen) in his spectator's hands. Bobby's broken wand has to be made of Koa for sure! Aloha Bobby!

Bobby will be missed in the magic community. I first met Bobby at a PCAM convention in Vancover BC, it must have been 1972. As I recall he won the close up competition. Years later he was doing magic at the Following Seas Rest. at pier 39 in San Francisco, I was working at the magic shop on the pier at the time. I spent my lunch hours eating at the bar and hanging out with Bobby talking magic. When the bar busy I would also do some magic for the patrons. For many years when ever I went to Hawaii I would visit Bobby. He had a great talent for entertaining people and making sure they were happy. He even sold lace at the flea market in Pearl City for many years. My future trips to Hawaii will not be the same.

Sorry to revive a zombie thread, but I just saw this and had to put in my two cents.
I met Mr. Acoba about 6 years ago at the World Magic Seminar and for a solid hour he blew me away non-stop. I hadn't the foggiest idea how he accomplished anything he did, and left me scratching my head in wonder for the rest of the convention. The reason I remember him even after all these years is because even though he had crazy chops, he didn't have the ego that comes with it. Mr. Acoba certainly wasn't the only magician that fooled me at the seminar. But he was one of the few that graciously accepted my praise and was humble about it-- to the point where it seemed as if he thought what he was pulling off was nothing special at all. I hope you rest in peace Mr. Acoba. I'm sure you will be missed by many others.
-Bob.
