Hello everyone,
My friend and I have an idea to start a comedy magic show 2 times a month (The first and third Tuesday per month) in a comedy club. It'll be about 80 mins. There will be 2 or 3 performers per show. But there are some problems, the first is how to keep drawing the audience? Do I have to add new effects everytime? How do I do to keep the audience come back and make them feel fresh? Second, do you think it's a good idea to include some vaudeville inside? It will add some different taste but I'm afraid it'll confuse the focus since we are a comedy magic show. In your opinion, 2 performers or 3, which one is better? Should we have new face every show to keep it fresh? If there are any other things that I should notice before we start, please tell me. Thank you very much. Best, YuYen

I hav no idea how it would work where you live. In America almost everything you said would absolutely destroy the show.
People would never come to see the exact same thing week in and week out. There is no way you could keep the show fresh enough. BUT that depends on if you have enough people turning over or not. It depends on the demographics of your area, and a thousand other things. Comedy clubs never made money selling tickets. Hell they gave em away in order to sell a 2 drink minimum! That was where the money was. There are so many things that may be different in where you are and how people view and enjoy things that even after 15 years of headling comedy club work, I have NO idea what to tell you.

Thanks Danny.
What you said is what I'm afraid of. The most difficult thing is to keep the show fresh, I'll try to find more performers rotating to make it. There is no regularly running comedy magic show in comedy club here in Taiwan, we will be the first one if we succeed, so that's why I wanna hear some advices from you because we have no examples to follow here in Taiwan. What I wanna do is like the Monday Night Magic show in NYC. http://www.mondaynightmagic.com/ Any advices are welcome. Thank you very much. Best, YuYen

Most likely the show is not what needs changing in those areas they have a high turn over rate of people therefore fresh faces at the show each night
I perform the same show every week at a resort but they have different people staying each week. think vegas - lance does the same show because he is er um I mean he WAS in a high traffic high turn over area - Vegas if you are running a local comedy club you will ger the "regulars" but they want to see new stuff. Danny hit the points home and has much more experience in this area then most so listen to him,. what you want to do is a tuff job good luck. sam

You'd be better off taking a show (the same show) on the road to a different audience and venue each night. Comedy clubs (at least herein the U.S. also have audiences so accustomed to "setup and punchline" type comedy other acts rarely are accepted in the comedy clubs. The exception would be a comedy hypnosis show and the very rare comedy mentalist or magician or prop comic. To generate the interest and audience you need on a regular basis to be successful, I'd advise looking elsewhere. Truth be told comedy clubs are really only a weekend business as they are either closed most week nights, have to paper the room during the week, or may only be open during the comedy season a couple of nights during the week such as a Thursday or Wednesday, plus the weekend. This is a very risky idea with the odds working against you. Plus it's not a very family-friendly environment (drinking adults only) which I would think a family venue would be better suited for what you're trying to achieve.

If you cna have a different audience every week, then no need for a fresh show.

YuYen,
How about break your show into smaller parts. Do comedy magic bits between the other acts. I think an 80 minute show straight through will never hold an audience. If you do smaller bits, you can chop your show and have more longevity in the club. Don't do your whole act then try to come up with more material. You could also develop some characters like newscasters, gamblers, political people, farmers, that are topical in Taiwan. Use topical comedy mixed with visual magic, but in small doses. James
