Does anyone do any work with actual candles? I'm wondering if there's anything out there that doesn't use gimmicked candles.
This question was brought about by watching Richard Robinson's "wandering candle" routine. Does anyone know where I can get more information on Richard Robinson? I'm enamoured with his magic but have no idea where to see him perform or how to contact him personally. He was technically the guy who got me back into magic all those yers ago. -Covernton |

Did you check the allmagicguide.com? I think that is his website.

I know his personal website is http://www.supermagic.com but I couldn't find an email link other than "booking information" and it provides precious little information about him.

I have not experimented with using real candles, but it is something worth looking into. I am sure you could also do many flip stick moves and productions with real candles as well. Good luck with it.

I use real candles in my act. I do a production from silk. I then vanish the candle under the silk and reproduce it from my pocket. It is holding the candle in the right place behind the silk that is the difficult bit - I would reccomend fantasio's!!

I think real candles allow you some creativity and would be worth exploring and experimenting with. I am sure flip stick moves could work well with this.
If you also switch them in for fantasio's, you could really develop some interesting routines.

I'm curious... what is a flipstick? I've never run across one... I assume it uses the same moves I've seen performed... ie the really quick vanishes and reproductions. I think I saw it done with a wand and a giant pencil on a couple occasions. Is this the same idea?

Sean:
Yes it is the same idea. Generally is is the vanishing and reproduction of any long and thin type of object. Sometimes this can include a wand, pencil etc. The moves vary and new ones can be created by exploration. I use it quite a lot in my own acts and routines. Kevin James does a really nice section on the flip stick and moves, on his magic castle lecture video. He coveres the general ideas and shows some improved moves you can do. I would certainly look into that as it would work quite well for magic and manipulation using real candles. Let me know if I can help you in any more detail.
