Don't get me wrong. I love Magic. Still love to watch good Magicians perform.
I am just tired of performing it myself. Really. (I'm more a Mentalist at heart you see...) However, I kinda like the idea of being a "Live Special Effects" Consultant for Product Launches and Opening Gambits... I don't even need to be on stage as a "Magician" (or onstage at all). In the past 10 years, I've done about 20 of these... Anyone do this a lot?

Yes, I've directed special effect/illusions for years for shows where there was no real "magician" present. I do love performing but this is just a different area of theatrical magic. Many times these are one-offs and some are very long running shows (one show is doing 40 to 60 shows a day for about 10 years).
The key is to really have the background, design and effects knowledge to be able to go into a production meeting as a true expert with other top designers in their fields and be prepared to deliver a practical answer for any question the have for you as that's what they will be able to do as well. They will look at you and give you a magic/illusion problem and you should be able to say "These are the 3 most common ways I've done this in the past but in this case I would recommend this one due to the specific parameters you've defined". They typically don't want someone who just has an idea, but someone who has real practical experience both from a design and production point of view to not just pitch it but actually bring it to life. I would frequently see magicians pitch themselves as a "magic consultant" for a TV show or project, then come into the magic shop I worked at and say "Ok, so how would you do this?" If they have to ask, then they shouldn't be in that position. It's fun, challenging and the most mentally demanding thing I do in my life.

I haven't acted as a consultant for product launches, but I have consulted for theatrical productions. Understanding the role of the magic within the production is key. The magic needs to supplement the plot and move it along rather than overshadow it completely. This type of engagement can be very rewarding.

Ray and Kent, thanks...
Food for thought for me, surely...
