Jamie D. Grant V.I.P. as seen in Ripley's Believe It or Not! Twice! 2413 Posts |
I was driving home from a gig last night when I saw this at the side of the road.
Needless to say, I pulled over. I remember growing up in a very small town in the north of British Columbia, Canada where every summer we would have "Billy Barker Days"~ which celebrated the Gold Rush. Two things stood out for me, above all others: 1) The Ping Pong Ball drop, where they would drop 100 ping pong balls off the roof of the local mall, each one having a number that would correspond with a store inside. If you got a ball, you would take it inside for a prize. I still have the $.25 picture frame that I won from the Frame Shop, when I was eight. and, 2) The Midway. Man, nothing beat the Midway. The sawdust, the fear of the carnies, the lights. I believe it was Westcoast Amusements that came up every year, and I looked forward to it all summer. Back then, it was the event for all of us. We would look forward to it for weeks, and then just walk back and forth, up and down the sawdust, for hours. And I was always struck by the people who worked there. Who were they? Where did they come from? All I knew was that they represented a life on the outside~ free from parents, the pulp mill, the small town life. More than anything, I wanted to run away and join them. It's an honour to be with all of you now. I never forget that. Your pal, jamie

You come to a point in your life when you really don't care what people think about you, you just care what you think about yourself.

Why don't we turn this thread into Midway Memories?
I betcha Todd and Co. have great stories (and pics?) to share! I'll add a few more here, from last night... Who's next? And don't worry about writing style, or being judged, etc. Let's turn this into 100 pages of thoughts, memories, pictures, and community. I'm with it, jamie
