I have a few decks missing some cards and was thinking of what I could do with them (hmm, I've been accused of not playing with a full deck but this is ridiculous) Yeah, some ideas I came up with were making a few DB'S or maybe some short cards or thick cards, of course using one card for card to shoe, and there is always keeping them for card warp or I do a version of "will the cards match" tearing 5 cards in half...any other thoughts or ideas?

Make as complete a deck as you can. Then use it with Aldo Colombini's "Punch his Match" from his lecture notes. Great effect and great way to get rid of old cards (spectators use a hole punch on the cards).
Hope this helps. |

Like you mentioned, card warp is obvious. T&R card routines, linking cards, put together Paul Harris's Solid Deception. You could put together some packet tricks (8 card brainwave, etc.). Or, you could use the cards by placing one in a new deck (remove the new duplicate) and force it for signature effects, then put the new card back when the effect is over.

When a deck gets to the point where it really isn't usable because too many cards are missing, I will use it for autographs. Invariably after a stage show, kids will want an autograph. Red-backed cards and a black sharpie are perfect for this...and much cheaper than reproducing photos.

If you have enough decks - say ten or so of differing back designs - you could consult Nick Trost's Subtle Card Creations volume 3 and construct the deck for Rainbow Miracle. I used to demo this effect in the early 2000s and it ALWAYS packed a wallop and was a sure sale at the shop. It was also a mainstay in my walkaround set. If you like the Gemini Twins plot, you will love Rainbow Miracle.

Make up a few sets of Dutch Loopers and give them out to those audience members that seem to have a sincere interest in magic.

@Turk,
'Will the Cards Match?' was invented by Larry Becker and is based on the Ramasee principle invented by Howard Adams. There is a good description of the effect on the Genii site: http://www.geniimagazine.com/tricks/inde......ey_match My favourite version of this trick to date is 'Will the Socks Match?' by Scott Strange. Can be found in the June 2010 issue of Genii. I also present this as a compatibility test using half cards (all Hearts). Goes down well with couples. This thread also contains some interesting ideas: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......m=206&11 Hope this helps, Marty |

Thanks for that info, Marty. It is very much appreciated.
I kind of suspected that Howard Adams might have had a hand in this. I just recently purchased Volume 3 of Aldo Comombini's ESP card tricks series and it was devoted to the magic of Howard Adams. And, now that you mention it, I do glancingly recall that Scott Strange came out with a sock version. I'm going to try and track down that June 2010 Genii magazine. I'm off to read both the Café thread and the Genii article you so graciously and helpfully referenced for me. Thanks again for all the info. Best, Mike

No problem, Scott's version is good. It has a very funny ending which stops the last pair being anti-climatic.

To answer the OP's question, I'd make up a few packet tricks that require duplicate cards. I have a small box full of old cards like you describe. I use these cards when developing/practising new packet tricks to avoid damaging a new deck. I also use old cards to practice my memorised deck work by writing the stack number on the back of each card.

I know that Larry Becker had the routine in lecture notes, but I've been told that it's appearance in APOCALYPSE (May 1987) is what popularized it. Is that true? HL.

What I do with those cards is throw them away.
