My wife's office was having a sales competition but the participants could get bonus points by doing various things, one of which was showing a magic trick.
Paula is very patient when I show her the latest and greatest, but has never had any interest in learning a trick, until now. Especially when her rival Dan announced that he would be performing a trick for everyone. I taught her Harry Lorayne's "Lazy Man's Card Trick" because it's self-working, easy to do, and she could concentrate on the presentation. We practiced for several nights before her big performance yesterday. Dan went first with a card trick that Paula described later as, "Something with counting 21 cards...". Apparently, the reaction from her office mates to Dan's trick was "Huh." Paula's presentation went off without a hitch, and she said that when she revealed the selected card, several people gasped, and the woman who had picked the card practically screamed. My conversation with her at home after work went something like this, "So, you've experienced the rush of killing an audience with magic. Ready to learn more? Ready to become a real student of the art?" "No." Oh well, she did enjoy showing up Dan and wowing her audience. - Bob P.S. Thanks, Harry Lorayne! |

Great story Bob and well done to your wife.
Women and card tricks go together like Hitler and fluffy rabbits. I once tried to teach a lass a simple selfworker,I knew I was in for a hard time when she said "What are those one's called that look like clovers?" |

Great story, and it definitely illustrates that people are motivated by different things.
If her "frenemy"/colleague Dan announced that he was learning one trick a week for the rest of the year, you best believe that she would learn two. |

I like that trick a lot. It is easy to learn and perform, but gets a good reaction. I have tried to shuffle the cards to make it look less like a prepared deck but I have problems making sure all the clubs drop together during the shuffle - of course if I knew how to work cards that should not be a problem.

Great story and good choice of trick. If she does need another quick wow moment self worker there's a great (super easy) ace cutting routine on Joshua Jay's Talk About Tricks DVD - highly recommended!

Naturally, I taught the missus 'Up The Ante' and she can now do a routine that causes jaws to drop, especially as it is the only one that she knows!
Have you tried 'Up The Ante' yet?? The ultimate gambling demo....a self-working wonder! See the reviews here on the cafe.

Hey Captain,
I did a search for 'Up the Ante.' Are you referring to the one by Martyn Smith? |

Looked into it some more. I get the feeling CaptianSmiffy and Martyn are two sides of the same coin. Watched a video and I actually know this one, but it's a version where half the deck is flipped over, shuffled, then the performer holds the cards behind his back, yaddayaddayadda. I always thought it was good yet knew there was potential to make it so much more powerful. Bang. Along comes this Martyn guy. It's when I come across little gems like these, I'm tempted to contact the magician and offer to father his children or something.

Absinthiste, no need, mate.... they're virtually all grown up now anyway!
Best, Martyn (aka Captainsmiffy, no secret there!)

Teach a lady a trick using 'Credit Cards' and she will be VERY interested!
I love LAZY MAN'S CARD TRICK. I actually get goose bumps when the card is revealed. I shuffle, retaining the bottom stock, set the deck on the table and say 'I don't want to touch these'.
There was a time I had the blues,
the reason was I had no shoes. Until I met upon the street a man who had no feet. |

It DOES seem that women have had a hard time breaking into the field professionally. Not sure why. There was a thread over on the forum for women in magic (I think Steve labeled it "Feminine Mystique" or something like that) that discusses this very topic.
Interesting read.
