Mistakenly posted this in the little darlings.
When it comes to "must reads" regarding marketing, can you please give me some suggestions as to your top 3-5? And please, by all means elaborate. Feel free to expand it to tools, ideas, tips whatever. As always, my thanks in advance.

I suggest you better define your current position and your future objectives (and any other details relevant). This will allow people to make suggestions based upon your specific needs. General questions will get general - and varied - answers. Based upon your question, I honestly have no idea which book to suggest.

Scott... DOH!
Goofed that one up. I'm working a full time job right now and getting birthday parties on the side here and there (few and far between). Going to attempt to ramp it up and get more of these gigs and more money out of the ones I do. So, I would "mostly" be targeting this market with and eye down the road on getting school shows and such. Donald, thanks for the links! My head is spinning. So many opinions on what to read.

Scott,
I am in the same exact place as the original poster, with the exception that I also do a few stage shows (usually for a charitable organization) per year and several shows for our Church at banquets etc. I, too, want to seriously ramp up, with the eye to going full-time in the next year or two (perhaps sooner). My biggest issue is that I live in rural Northern Michigan, so I will have to likely travel quite a bit in order to expand. So, I am looking to get into the school/library market. My ultimate goal is to get my stage show, "The Dream", designed, scripted and built...and take that on the road.

Kihei kid,
I believe in finding resources that are specific to you needs. For birthdays, I suggest: - learning about and building a one-page SEO rich web site so that parents can find easily on-line (organically). Jack Turk is a great resource for both SEO and web marketing with a simple but highly effective web site. Or, alternatively, buy books (or visit library) specifically on (1) SEO and (2) sales letters (for the web site). - learn about adwords which will get you business quicker than SEO. Perry Marshall's book is often called the main source on the topic. Jack Turk also talks about this. - develop a give-away sheet to hand to all of the kids in attendance at your current shows. - tell everyone you know that you perform at birthdays to get the word out Hope this helps. Remember: keep it simple (don't buy everything out there - just the specific info you need). |

Aside from the sources / action that Scott recommended, here are a few more specific to birthday party shows:
* Jack Turk's How to Make $25,000 a Year Doing Birthdays Part-Time * John Carlson's Big Birthday Party Business * John Breeds' How to Create Kid's Magic And Triple Your Income * Tony Daniels' Kid-Show Magician's Notebook * Tony Daniels' Birthday Party Booking System - Donald P.S. There are a lot of threads on the Café about getting birthday party shows, in the Tricky Business and the Little Darlings areas. Do a little searching and reading.

Hope this helps. Remember: keep it simple (don't buy everything out there - just the specific info you need). Yeah, makes sense. Exactly what I'm attempting to do right now, sort through the MOUNTAIN of information. I see several big time marketing tools out there and wonder. Thanks again.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay. I've been traveling a lot these days. Sales letters: referring to learning how to write sales copy (similar to sales letters). Birthdays are usually a last-minute booking (booked weeks in advance rather than months or years) so you get one shot at selling them as decisions are made quick. Look up books by Dan Kennedy or the materials in Jack Turk's courses. Yes, giveaways like the big dollar or anything that has value for the kids but has your info on it. |

I think Paul Daniels Course "Make money with magic" can be very helpful for you too. It includes a lot of nices ideas for birthday shows and how to get them.

I was part of the Eric Paul's Marketing course and James Munton's course (zerotobookedsolid.com), and my favorite was James' course by light years (as it helped me the most). Unlike other courses, It actually has: structure, a game plan and personalized attention.

James's course does have the advantage that you can communicate with him all through the course. It is the comment section that enables you do to do this. It is a very valuable feature and I don't think any other of these magic marketing courses have anything similar.
