I can't say that all of the modern vampire stuff is bad. I liked the first couple of Anita Blake books and Lestat was an OK character in the books until "Tale of the Body Thief."
It was the Interview movie coming out at the same time that Hot Topic opened that was the beginning of the end. Soon afterwards, vampires got less dangerous and more... cute. I will always be a Nosferatu guy. And that brings us back to the original topic. The 1970's Nosferatu is not one that I think was better than the original, but I think James Whale's Frankenstein was better than the original Edison version.

What about the three film versions of Richard Matheson's 1954 sci-fi novel, "I Am Legend":
Vincent Price in "The Last Man on Earth" (1964) or Charlton Heston in "The Omega Man" (1971) or Will Smith in "I Am Legend" (2007) I am torn between the Charlton Heston & Will Smith versions...they both did a good job portraying scientist Robert Neville.

I did not like two things about "I Am Legend":
1) The scientist kills off the zombies and saves the woman and child by blowing himself up. In this day and age, self-immolating bombers should not be celebrated. 2) The death of the dog. |

I don't recall either in the Matheson story.
Then again folks seem to have overdone it with "Button Button" (the box) remakes as well IMHO. The remake of his Nightmare at 20000 feet was pretty good though. Any favorite remakes of The Tempest or Romeo and Juliet or Midsummer Night's Dream?

Thanks for reminding us about the classics, Jon. Some non-obvious choices:
The Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Baz Luhrmann Romeo + Juliet was a credible motorcycle gang update. Nice modern day adaptation of Othello with "O," you can almost line up scene for scene, starring Julia Stiles and Mekhi Phifer. White and black basketball players at a high class school in a jealous triangle. Teenagers are absolutely mesmerized by it. (BTW anyone remember the 50s Expresso Bongo with Patrick Mcgoohan?) The BBC did a memorable, if little seen, version of Macbeth, about the cutthroat world of restaurant chefs. Better than the originals? Wish I knew. Gosh, how many souls would I have to sell to see Burbage?
