I find it very interesting that with these ungimmicked props you can carry very easily with you, a whole act could be devised at the drop of a hat. If more magicians would take pride in obtaining only one of these props and learn it well, he would be above everyone else showing the latest new trick on the market.
I have found people love to watch well presented skilled magic performed time and again. Thimbles, Billiard Balls, and Coins, can be easily carried and more can be done with them then just pulling them out of thin air. Thus an entertaining sequence of events can be joined together to amaze the onlookers. In most cases resetting is miniscule or non-existent. With some thought a shoulder bag can be your pockets if necessary and there is little need to have any special containers or pockets on your clothing. The key is to come up with an entertaining sequence of effects that add to the whole. Proficiency can be obtained simply by carrying a prop with you and whenever you see time to work you fingers and hands, do so with the prop. Waiting for an appointment, or watching you favorite sports game, anytime you find your hands free to get familiar with your props. |

I have a question about coin manipulation. I have been doing roll outs with plastic interlocking poker chips. First, is this a good idea? It seems to work fine to me. Second, will clay and ceramic poker chips work too or are they too thick?

Rolling from the thumb and index to the little finger, and dropping it in a container. This continued for several chips with both hands. It was very good skill. Sure use plastic or clay, the only thing about the clay is that they are thicker and may chip or break when dropped on the floor. Being they are thicker, you cannot produce as many. |

The "famous European manipulator that did a continuous roll out of poker chips" to whom wmhegbli is referring is (I believe) Tonny van Dommelen from Holland, who won the FISM Grand Prix in 1958. I think his act was one of the ones featured on one of the cable TV/HBO magic specials.
