I am getting back into magic now after taking a break for a few years. I recenty joined the SCA and am going to be doing renaissance themed magic at a few events during the year.
My first chance to perform a few simple pieces will be in a few weeks now. So far I am only expecting to do a couple of things. A quick Okito box trick, a Tarot card trick, maybe a chop cup or cups a ball routine. This will be just to try and get my feet wet again. I plan on working up a lot more than that but it all takes time. -Max |

Thanks Dr JK! My biggest challenge so far is trying to find stuff to perform that is at least period looking. I need to avoid a lot of common modern objects like the sharpie pen, a watch, and so on.
So far I am trying to work on some Tarot deck effects, some coin stuff using reproduction renaissance coins, silk , and rope magic. -Max |

Do you have Tarbell? I would think you would find a lot of great "older" stuff.
If you're a member at the Learned Pig Project, you have free access to a lot of "old" magic that would probably work well with your venue. |

Rope, Linking Rings made with iron rings, maybe even a little rusty, etc. Walnut shells and pea. Make a set of Chinese Sticks with bamboo or some other item that fits. You could take a standard Lota Vase and paint and/or decorate so that it looks period...not that difficult to do. Most Change Bags are not particularly dated as such. You could even decorate one with stars, half moons, etc.
Make a chop cup out of ANY period looking cup: Wood, pottery coffee cup, etc. Knitted balls will fit right in. Produce fruit, etc. for final loads. Consider that most of the classics are hundreds if not thousands of years old: Linking Rings, cups and balls for example. Many modern routines can be easily redone by decorating with leather, wood, polished rock, etc. Good luck,

I earned my Award of Arms in the SCA partly by performing. It's a fun pasttime.

You could use wooden drapery ring and do ring and rope.
Wooden ball and cone perhaps. |

You might also make a heavy Siberian Chain and perform it with one of the "antique repro." padlocks currently being imported from India.
Card in egg also works well.
