I thought it'd be good to spread some good thoughts and feelings. So, what's your most 'feel-good' show that you ever did?
Mine wasn't a show per-se, but basically post-show when me and my friend did something for a kid. We were performing in a hospital for seriously ill kids (cancer ward). One of them was so weak that he was not allowed out of the ward (he had weak immunity and could not be allowed out lest he got infected somehow), so he had missed our show and was really sad. The nurse made an exception and instead of him coming out to watch the show, we went in to perform something for him. We did Ninja Rings and Sponge Balls for him. I can never forget that look of delight and amazement from him. This was before I do shows full-time. I never know what happened to this little boy after (he was 6 then)... Anyway, I believe this was part of the inherent reason why I took the dive into this profession full-time! What about you? :) |

After most of my preschool shows I get spontaneous hugs from some of the kids - boys and girls. At first I was a little uncomfortable with this, thinking, "I'm just some guy who entertained you for 40 minutes. Why are you hugging me?" Now, I love it and appreciate it for what it is - an expression of thanks for making them laugh and feel good for a little while.
Those shows reaffirm my faith in what I am doing for a living, and truly make me "feel good." |

A few years ago I got a call from a nurse in a hospital that I do occasional gigs in. There was a sick boy who had missed his birthday because he was in hospital. He was seven, and had suffered a stroke. Now he was home recovering, and the nurses had all chipped in to give him a great late birthday party. He was still in a wheelchair, and his speech was not fully back yet, but because of his age he was expected to make a full recovery.
The party was a three hour drive from where I was then living, but I went along and didn't take the fee. It felt good to be part of that outpouring of love and support from the family. I was impressed that the nurses cared so much, and it made me far more confident of our health service. At least it is in good hands. Last I heard, the boy is making very good progress and is back at school, running around with his mates. That was one gig that made me feel good about what I do for a living.

My first paid gig, when I was eighteen, was for a boy who was dying of cancer. I didn't find out until afterwards. The whole thing threw me into a turmoil, and I didn't do magic for almost a decade. I don't know why it affected me like that, but it did.

I had a similar experience, ade. I was performing at a Ronald McDonald House. One lad was too sick to leave his bed. I was asked if I might perform a few small effects in his room. I did. It made my day more than it made his. Working for anyone who truly appreciates our efforts is the reason I stay in this business. Putting a smile on the face of an otherwise dejected countenance is a true blessing.

Goes to show that sometimes we do what we do because it is good for our own souls more than anything else!
Seriously, I think these are the things that we will rmbr in the end, and keep us pushing to always keep performing! I just wish it always end nice... like TonyB2009's.. |
