From time to time on these boards we kick up the dust discussing endorsements and accolades for products/ebooks created by our fellow Café members. (We sort of touched on it here - http://bit.ly/k5eew5 - most recently.)
The comment that comes to my mind is in the vein of "It doesn't matter what the price is, everything he puts out is gold," especially when the book/ebook or product has yet to be released. The discussion referenced above got me thinking: OK, if all of our fellow performers here put out nothing but top-notch stuff, then what, exactly, do you guys perform in full-length shows that you bought from The Magic Café denizens. I was using a confabulation routine by Floyd Collins, Movie Time, until I purchased Bob Cassidy's Journey Through the Fourth Dimension. Collins' effect is a good one, and it got great feedback, but I like that Cassidy's Fourth Dimensional Telepathy appears to be propless. It absolutely amazes the audience and leaves them stunned. I have a number of Richard Osterlind effects that I keep in ready for some impromptu stuff after shows, like Radar Deck and BCS, but I have been moving away from cards in performances. I do Great Minds Think Alike from the Corinda DVDs as part a of three-phase routine. From Rick Maue, I perform Body Language and Group Dynamic as a two-phase chair routine. I recently purchased Fate, and I cannot wait to debut it in my show at one of my July performances. And, I perform my own three-phase book test, which Richard Osterlind helped me improve. I know that there is a lot of good stuff produced, but when it comes down to choosing material (unless you create it yourself) for a one-hour show, it becomes hard to fit everything you like into it. Unfortunately, some stuff does not make the cut. I would love for you to share your thoughts about what truly is gold, so much so you had to put it in your act. Thanks, Bobby

It just depends on the act. An effect can be excellent, yet not necessarily the sort of thing I would perform on stage. On the other hand, there are effects that I would perform on stage that I wouldn't perform closeup. It really depends on the effects and the application. I normally do closeup, but I have done some stage acts as well.
That said, some effects I can remember having performed include an effect from Mind Blasters 2 (can't remember the name), a Mind Power deck, a cold reading routine I invented, virtually all of my effects in general, Silent Running, Paul Carnazzo's ESP cards, Amira's IDS, Acidus Novus and Switchcraft on multiple occasions, Thought Chunnel by Joshua Quinn, Colin's psychological word force, Osterlind's MCS, Cassidy's Quarterforce, Daniel Madison's Devil's Touch, and his effect "CUT", Shudder by Christopher Dee, and others.

I have two different shows, one seance/ghost hunter type of show, the other is a mind reading themed show and there are three variations of each show.
The only effects I have bought from people here on the Café' that I perform are a variety of Outlaw Effects: The Departed Relic Scorpion Carnie Tarot Kioku Luna 34, 35, 36 Lillian Chiller. The Departed, Chiller and either of the Lunas or Lillian are performed together along with Lebanon Circle's Spirit Text. From Lebanon Circle: Spirit Text From Hell I also perform a couple of routines from The Drooby Book by Drew McAdam I have a Hot Ball that I bought from someone, can't remember who, from the effects for sale section. Everything else I perform is from either Corinda or Anneman or other sources.
Peace

This is a great thread.
As for performance...I think DekEl made a great point. It depends on the venue and the audience. But as for effects I've purchased directly from members of the Café that I USE all the time: Luna 1935 is the best buy for me. It fits me perfectly. Cereal Killer when something silly is called for. Djinn Box and the Carnie Tarot when freaking people out is called for. ParaLabs everything for everything Riggs Imps for...well...everything...and Psypher as well. MT decks for walkabout Osterlind Blindfold AND the entire Mind Mysteries series (featuring what I see as The Perfect Bank Night Routine) Whitestar...and pendulums. I will usually check out what the people here are saying...or staying very quiet about...here in the Café. David

Greetings everyone,
I just wanted to jump in real quick because Bobby mentioned my piece, Group Dynamic. Some of you may remember that several months ago, I had mentioned that we would be selling an ebook that dealt specifically with that routine...and it would also include the updated version that I now use. But this week, we have decided to not sell that manuscript. However, we have decided to give that manuscript away for free instead. In short, over the past month, a number of people have lent us a hand...and to show our thanks, we will be making the ebook available as a free download by the end of July. For those that use Group Dynamic, I think you are going to really like the new version. For those that are not familiar with the original version, I hope you check out the ebook when we get everything ready. Once again, thanks to all of you...and I hope to see some of you as I begin to test my road legs in Maryland, Illinois and Michigan in July. Keep the change, Rick |
