Curious as to how many other novelists/fiction writers there are on the Café. I know Mark Townsend is one and Andrew Mayne is another.
Would enjoy knowing since misery loves company! |

Other than Jim Swain, are there any other magicians/mentalists who are proper published novelists - i.e. writers who are with a mainsteam publisher and whose books can be found in regular book shops?

I don't believe that Jim Swain is a Café member. Penn Jilette also published a novel - but I don't think he participates in magic forums either. And the late Val Andrews (of the 'Unfaked Book Test' fame) made most of his living during his later years as a writer of Sherlock Holmes stories.
I'd still be interested to know if there is anyone on the Café who is actually a published author of fiction. |

James Munton has just had a book on non-fiction published by a mainstream publisher. Of course, knowing him it may qualify as fiction anyway.

Thanks Mark: that would be the 'Cons and how to avoid them' book? If we open it up to non-fiction there must be a lot of examples, as many magicians have written books on magic, or subjects related to magic, for the general public. The most successful non-fiction author on the Café must be Harry Lorayne, who has been writing memory books for mainstream publishers for over 50 years and whose sales must be well into the millions by now.

"Monstrum! A Wizard's Tale," by Tony "Doc" Shiels:

"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

In fact, many on the Café have been extremely helpful when I've had to figure out some very tricky (no pun intended) illusions and there will be appropriate credits in the book. Also, one Café member who wishes to remain anonymous right now won an auction (a forbidden word here on the Café)to help Rick Maue. This member, who donated $500, will appear in the second novel as a character under both his real and his stage name. At the moment, two Café members are part of my "brainstorming" team and a special few very respected members have graciously agreed to serve as advisors on the second book. BTW, a percentage of my profits on both books will be used to benefit kids through magic and more details and this will be forthcoming. Panlives--thanks for pointing out Doc Shiels's book. I've added it to my reading list. |
