Hi Guys,
Im currently learning Craig Petty's 'Chop' which as most of you will know finishes with a lemon being produced and a bill magically appearing inside the lemon (awesome trick!!) As I have quite small hands for a male I am struggling with the handling of the lemon. As limes are smaller I believe they would be better for me and they would be covered more by my hand. My question is, not exclusively regarding Chop, but in any lemon production effect has anyone substituted a lime and if so how did it affect the trick. I fear that some of the "wow" moment might be lost as the lime isn't as big and bright as a lemon...or am I overthinking this?? Thanks. AA

I have substituted limes for lemons at the start of performing CHOP.. for one reason its this part of the season that the lemons are too large and don't fit under my smaller cup.
the tie it by my mind is to warn the specs that they are going to see somehing "else" ... green I am sticking with limes.. though I had to tell Craig last week that in my rush recently I unknowingly loaded prepared fruit in Both pockets...sigh. Marty |

For some reason, I've always thought of lemons as more "funny.". I wonder if laymen think this way too (it probably doesn't matter though).
The one gag I've been meaning to try is produce a lime "by accident" and get rid of it with a spray bottle of Lime Away ( you could rub the lime with a cloth after spraying and topit it in the process). Frank http://limeaway.com/products-trigger.php |

My advice would echo Pete.
I also like that idea about squirting the lime with Lime Away, then proceeding to vanish it. Just remember to use water instead of the actual Lime Away...Another thought would be to change the lime into a lemon by using a simple sleight of hand billiard ball color change. |

Limes are just darker, so if you're working on a dark surface it won't pop as much as the lemon would. I think that's the main reason for using lemons, the yellow just stands out more. Also, your hand size doesn't make a difference as long as you have sufficient misdirection. I've been finishing most of my cup routines these days with two baseballs and those things are way bigger than my palms could ever hide were someone to be looking directly at them.

I have used limes with my copper PF cups for years! I think dark green looks great against aged copper! Not a problem.

I use whatever I can find that fits my cups. It depends on the store where you buy your fruit and vegetables. The Safeway grocery store used to sell both large and small lemons. Alas they have gone exclusively with the larger ones.
Grocery stores in the US seem to want to sell gigantic fruit and vegetables. I found that some of the the smaller fruit stands and markets that are run by individuals rather than a corporation will have the less marketable fruit and vegetables that are smaller.

I use limes all the time because they are rounder than lemons and easily obtained. Lemons are are more oblong and will fit easily in a cup one way but if rotated a bit they won't fit. You'll see me using 3 limes and a lemon for my Cups and Balls routine in my new book The Book of Destiny. In the video on the companion 2 hour DVD I use 3 limes and a tomato for the final load.

It is true that with sufficient misdirection, you can get away with a lot of things. BUT, not every performer has that level of skill, ability or confidence.
As pointed out in the two posts above, it is also a matter of the size of your cups and what they can handle. I have used just about every type of fruit/vegetable as a final load, but that is because they fit into my cups. If I am running behind and have to quickly grab some fruit as a final load, I go with limes myself because they are most likely to fit the best because of their more rotund nature. Do not forget that limes can get just as big as lemons in some cases. |

Spend some time in the produce section of a really big supermarket. Then you will see the variations that occur with limes, lemons, oranges and other fruit. Kiwi is a great final load.
Secret -- use something that is easy to hold in your hand. To echo Pete Biro's sentiment -- Use what works for you. It's not the object you produce. It's how you sell it. BTW, you need to consider not only your cups, but your close-up mat and your clothing when you are considering final loads. Make sure the loads contrast with ALL of them.

Thanks everyone for all your advice. I've taken on board to use what works for the individual, also the variation in size of the fruits depending on the season (never considered that!) I'm going to have a look at limes and Kiwis today whilst out shopping. I guess there's no hard and fast rule and it's all about experimenting...can't wait!!
@Eddie Torres - I appreciate your point regarding sufficient misdirection however I am a beginner to magic and whilst I am practicing both the sleight of hand and the performance/misdirection I'm gonna try a smaller fruit. BTW... Baseballs?? That's very impressive, would like to see that performed and pick up some misdirection tips...do you have a vid online? Thanks again everyone!! AA

Get your post count up past 50. Then you will be able to access the Secret Sessions. There is a very detailed account of how to do final loads there.

Lots of very dim lighting at the restaurant I perform at. I get great reactions from both lemons and limes but I've always noticed that the initial gasps always seem stronger when I'm using lemons. The table, mat, and my clothing are all black. Yellow just stands out more and therefore gets a better reaction for my circumstances.

I am working on making a red potato make sense for me. REASON: I really like potatoes, and it would be fun for me . . . fun for me = fun for audience if I do it well.

If you are performing "Chop", I like to make it seem that I am pushing the bill-ball up through the hand versus letting it drop from the cup in one of the final phases of the routine. It seems to get a stronger response from my audience members.
In effect, I do a false vanish up and into the hand holding the paper/styrofoam cup as I lift off the sharpie. I've also tried a limes due to the time constraints of purchasing more lemons once, when a friend used them to prepare a fish dinner. Regards, Rey-Rey (r2) |
