It's not about the playing cards. It's about how well the magician performs. If the magician performs in a boring manner, the spectators are going to be bored.

Gino, do you want to do a street show or a card show?
if you want a street show first start to learn the basics of the street. inviting strangers to sit down won't work. you have to have a crowd first. establish a rapport. then when 20 people are around you might ask for sitting down. so a card table on the street might work on an event on in a busking situation. make the card tricks big and flashy. card in balloon with jumbo cards (hen fetch) jumbo 3 card monte (special index cards) as a finale do a malini card stab with 7 to 10 cards. dramatic because of the knife and the many people involved. learn the strade of the street first then start looking for the right effects. |

How important is visibility? If you have a crowd of 100 people is it enough to have one spec asked in a loud clear voice "is this your card" (or whatever)
I don't know but I am thinking of taking my close up act to the street (I met a lovely guy Sergio in Covent Garden who encouraged me to give it a go) but it IS close up....not sure how well close up transfers. Ignorant but seeking, Danny |

Ive seen people like Ken Lightfoot hold 100's people spellbound with his card throwing & brilliant comedy also seen people like Nick Nickolas do card manipulations, cards from mouth etc also with comedy but as part of a street show as Robert mentioned but Nick had already won the crowd over Jeff Sheridan did a silent card act to music finishing with Diminishing cards that was amazing in New York maybe look at this, a silent act maybe.... for you Good luck |

I busk during srping and summer monthes here on the east coast and I never use cards on the street due to humidity and sweaty hands, the cards just do not want to do what I want of them in those conditions.
Cards on the street in this heat...I think it's crazy but dare to be different right? |

At Kozmo's workshop at Winter Carnival of magic both Kozmo & Doc Eason said don't start with card tricks. But then I saw Gazzo & Bobby Maverick both start with a card trick & they build a huge crowd... with card tricks.
Although I believe it was because of how they presented it, not the fact that it was a card trick... |

I think if you're going to do a cards only show, you absolutely should up with a card trick.
Just my opinion.

Fino Gino!
I use a small card table to perform my sets on the sidewalk. There is rarely an opportunity for most folks to catch some close-up work in my particular spot as every single sidewalk magician chooses to not work with one. This has fostered excellent relations working with said magicians as we are doing unique shows. I notice that each of them closes with grandma's necklace for some strange reason. So it seems they are limiting themselves to something that may work, but certainly isn't unique to performance magic or our patch of earth in San Diego. It's quite a simple thing to step away from the table and perform anything not requiring a table. I love it because of the range it offers. It certainly helps to not limit yourself whence performing particularly when working for hats. R2 |
