You can do any routine that you usually do with a dummy but substitute an audience member with the mask on, but the mask is a good opportunity to ad lib and play with the audience.
Ron Lucas, Pete Michaels, and the late Joe Boley have videos of mask routines that are very good. You may be able to find them on youtube. Pete's an accomplished singer and does a great Sonny and Cher routine. I don't recommend you copy these routines, but they should be a good source of inspiration. |

Thanks. Any tips on how you can encourage the volunteer to get into the act (otherwise he is just standing still doing nothing). Do you tell them ahead of time what they should do with their hands and feet?

Yes. Regan is right. I meant Bill. When I bought a Boley mask I bought it from Joe.

So I got a question for you guys about vent masks...
I tried one before and it's a real pain to put on and off my volunteer (It almost seems like I would need an assistant to put it on just like how Terry Fator has an assistant put it on and he just keeps talking). The mic mouth is not designed for longer acts like Fator has it. Is there such a thing as a vent mask that is super easy to put on and off? I've only used one vent mask and gave up on it because of how difficult it is to put it on (it keeps sliding down) and when I tighten it it becomes uncomfortable on the volunteer. It would be nice at venthaven if there were vent mask dealers where we can try them out. |

In my regular acts where I have assistants, I use them to put on the masks from behind the audiemce volunteer while I stay in front and place the mask on the volunteer's face as I explain to him/her that the mask is clean.
In cases where I perform without an assistant, I find it very easy to put the masks on by myself. Check out some routines at the bottom of the page done by fantastic vents from here and there http://wanlu.net/ventmasks.html

Cue the volunteer to put actions with words...
Example if "he" is going to say yes...have him shake head no Cue the volunteer to snap fingers during song Cue the volunteer to go up and down while bending knees during a country song. Find what fits your character and audience....priceless I used all the above in an assisted living gig yesterday. The volunteer was the Activity Coordinator. The residents loved it(her) and the routine. At a church, I have picked out the Pastor's secretary. Getting the right volunteer is as important as the routine. Harris stil 2 old to know it all
