I just got the Medieval Tarot and would like to take some of the shiny newness off the faces. I'm not a card man and I have no experience in such matters. Any tips/ideas? Steel wool? Sand paper?

Hold the deck tight, drag the edges along a brick wall.
take very fine sand paper or steel wool and do a lite surface roughing. takie a cookie sheed and pour a bit of dark roast coffee in, just enough to go over the tip of the cards that you spread out on the sheet. let soak for 15-20 mins. preheat over to 200 deg. put cards on a dry cookie sheet and place in over till they dry. this gives them a brown/. golden hue and ages the sides as well as the faces. place them in a damp area where they will get a mildew scent to them for a more aged smell. you can now use them for bridge shuffles, waterfalls and other things that will break in a deck of cards. what your trying to do now is get some of the playability back in to the cards. |

I have a tutorial going up on the Moon later today which covers the aging of cards. It will be in the new Practical Considerations section.
Michael, those are great tips. Pop over later and add them to the discussion!

That photo of you, Weepinwil, did you age that for many many hours in tea - or is it natural ?
(Had to ask first in case I offend ! LOL !). |

The sun is a great fader and yellower of cards, also regular handling will grubby them up a bit. You will find online, decks of cards from the 1800's in varying conditions. A little research goes a long way and less is more.
