That's really cool you share the idea David. I'm going to try that and see how it works for me.
Man, I (and I guess all of us) hope you look around at the Café when you have the time and leave a post here or there!

Just got this in and it reads great! I can't wait to give it a few trial runs, but I need to work out my presentation.
I do like the Faro method as well as the deck switch, but I'm not sure that I won't be using a variation of the non-Faro method on a regular basis. Personally, I think it will play well and I like the impromptu-ness of this method, especially with a borrowed deck that may not Faro well. David, this deserves a double thumbs-up! It's great! Hi All
Do I get this right? There are three ways: Faro Shuffle No Faro Shuffle Deck Switch ...or only two? FS and DS |

That's just for the last phase of the effect. It's a good effect that's not overpriced and has a good story; are you trying to reconstruct it? Just buy it. Even the booklet and cover design are excellent.

Hi Brian
Thanks for the information but it isn't what I wanted. I also don't want to reconstruct the trick. There is a lot of information on the trick but it is not coherent. I can't make out if there are three or two alternative handlings and the problem is this: I can't do Faro Shuffles I won't do deck switches If there is no alternative, the effect is not for me or does this effect require expert handling or is it for dummies like me? One of the benefits of this forum is that it stops people buying back-of-the-drawer stuff based on hyped-up ads and recommendations of the seller's buddies. Here is the question again: Do I get this right? There are three ways: Faro Shuffle No Faro Shuffle Deck Switch ...or only two? FS and DS How about a really clever answer that will not allow me to reconstruct the effect? Like "Yes 2" or "Yes 3". LOL |

Yes 3. And that is THE terrible secret...

Gotcha. Sorry, I jumped to the wrong conclusion.
The effect can be performed very simply without a Faro shuffle and without a deck switch. The Faro shuffle adds a bit to the mystery of it because the alternative method may be transparent. If you choose to perform it the "easy" way, the hardest move you have is a riffle shuffle. There are a lot of optional things you can do so it's pretty flexible for everyone's abilities. It's really the storyline that sells the effect because it's very simple. Brian |

Thanks Dan
That's all I needed. All the positive stuff on this topic had sold me on the effect. Now that I know that I will be able to do it, it goes on the top of my list. |

Hi guys.
This is a new experience for me-this forum is a window to the type of feedback I never got the last time I put out a product. It's very gratifying to see the interest in the trick. I'd like to share a patter line that I've been using to justify the color matching game which forms the basis of the routine. I talk about the battles of the Civil War and the gravediggers charged with burying the bodies of the dead. When they went onto the battlefield after a bloody fight they would dig shallow graves and throw TWO bodies in to save time. They didn't care if the dead soldiers were Union troops or Confederate. So later, when the graves were unearthed, those people performing the exhumation would sometimes find two bodies in blue uniforms, two in gray and sometimes one of each. These gravediggers played a card game in their tents at night called "blue& gray" based on their grim work. Then I show how the game is played, and how the card sharps of that era took advantage of the popular game. It makes a nice story-and if you can get hold of some old confederate money-that really ties it together. That's it. I've had lots of fun with this routine over the years and those I've shown it to have come back with some very cool variations. Dave |

Re: Learning a Faro
You can do the Wiliamson routine without a Faro and it's explained in the manuscript. I haven't been able to do a faro for years after attempting to learn from various print and video sources UNTIL I got Mike Close's CD-ROM on learnign the Faro shuffle. With some practice I'm able to do it consistently from new decks and even decks in ****py condition. The CD was worth every penny I spent on it. I believe that I got it from Denny & Lee's. Mike Close also sells it on his website. Jeremy |

My sugestion to learn The Faro Shuffle:
Read Michael Close's input about the Faro Shuffle in "Workers #5", page 65. At the same time have Ed Marlo's small booklet "The Faro Shuffle", from Magic, Inc. at hand. If you don't have that booklet, you can use Marlo's "Revolutionary Card Technique", page 153. After this, sit down at your computer, and insert Michael Close's CD-Rom "On The Faro Shuffle" (whitch works on both PC and Macintosh). Note, you need Windows Media Player to be able to watch this CD on a PC. Hope this helps

I had the oppertuntiy to see Dave Perform Aunt Mary's Terrible secret at the Columbus Magi-fest for a large group of magicians, and he cleaned house. The manuscripts were gone faster than a bag of potatoe chips in ethiopia. I agree that it is not suited for strolling but in a relaxed casual atmosphere it is really an unbelivable routine.

Dave's putting Aunt Mary’s Terrible Secret out on DVD as part of a larger project with Luis De Matos. It's been edited, so maybe for Christmas?
