Hi guys,
lots of you probably have quite a lot of performing experience to either children or elderly. I am planning to do voluntary work in a community center (my first time) and I plan to do magic, so I can build you confidence, get experience and such. WHich elderly or chldren is easier to perform to? It is my first time and I want to start easy. and also any tips on either of the age group that I need to do when other age group don't? e.g. do less card trick for elderly etc. thanks very muc h |

For me, elderly is easier to perform to because they'd be more likely to understand what it is I'm doing. When I perform for kids, they're allways trying to rip the cards, or steal something and it all gets very annoying.

If possible try and find out the ages of the children that may be there. Very young children do not understand cards but a silk and TT can work wonders. When they are a little older some cards can work well but not necessary the normal 52 card deck of playing cards. Think of what you can do with happy family cards or cards with childrens TV characters etc. Wrap stories into presentations for the particularly young children.
Different magic appeals to children of different ages (or sometime the same piece of magic is fine but with different presentations). It may be worth investing in the book "Seriously Silly" by David Kaye if you are going to be doing this regularly and expect there to be lots of children. The book goes into a lot of detail in this area. For elderly spectators you may want them to sign any cards that are selected in case they forget. Also keep the routines on the short side in case they have any trouble concentrating. I am sure that others have many more practical ideas. |

I think elderly are easier to work for and they are also so, so grateful for some company. Some of them are very lonely and just your presence and effort will make their day.

Amen to that, Thurston.
I wish I would've kept my "20 Minutes with a Balloon" video!! Great silly stuff for the younger set. |

I think that olderpeople are easier to perform for. They understand the experience of live entertainment and magic and are not hooked into the instant gratification of the digital environment that kids are growing up with. However, I have been asked to perform at retirement villages a couple of times, only to find that many in the audience are not able to interact with the performance. So be ready to pull out routines that do not need a volunteer to come forward, or for people to shout out responses.

For the first performance, elderly are the best. They are patient and understanding, and tend to be a little more forgiving if you flash or something doesn't work right. Children can shatter your confidence if it is your first show. I know this from experience, I went almost a year before I was willing to do a second show.
