Congrats on the release of your book Avant-Cards. Your Lateral Bottom Deal is an amazing technique. Many of your techniques are different from what you see a lot of today. Can you give a little of your thought process as to how you come up with a new move; also who inspires you the most?

The Lateral Bottom Deal, as well as several of its derivatives, evolved from working with Marlo’s “Outward Bottom Deal” from Seconds, Centers, Bottom, by Ed Marlo. For those unfamiliar with the move, the Lateral Bottom Deal is a One-handed Bottom Deal that begins with the deck laying face down on the table. While there are many applications for the move—it’s extremely useful as a high card cut. At any rate, over the years I spent a great deal of time (perhaps five-hundred hours) exploring the potential of the Outward Bottom Deal. In fact, the table of contents of Avant-Cards contains three chapters related to Bottom Deals—all inspired by Marlo’s Outward Bottom Deal. For those interested, in a couple of days I will be posting a video of the Lateral Bottom Deal on YouTube.
As far as my inspirational sources are concerned—I will always be a Vernon type guy—followed by Lorayne—and then by Marlo. Other inspirational sources include Steve Forte, Juan Tamariz and Bill Malone. |

Glad you're posting some more videos. Awaiting your book and think a few companion videos would be helpful.

I just read the outward deal from Second, Center and Bottoms and found it tough to understand the buckling action of the bottom card. I look forward to your book Tom to see what you came up with from Marlo's Deal and also to the video of it being done by you.

Re the Outward Bottom Deal from Seconds, Centers, and Bottoms as detailed in Avant-Cards. Think of the buckling action as a block push off. The rest will fall into place.

Tom,
Let me first congratulate you on completing the monumental task of drawing the 550 plus illustrations you felt the book required to make the 60 plus items clear. I've long felt, and have often said, that you are the best illustrator currently working in the magic community. For a time the "Currently working" phrase was as bit dubious, this book ends the draught. This book should serve the community and your reputation well when they see your drawings applied to your creative efforts. Since I've probably spent more time than anyone except yourself in analyzing and understanding your techniques and the wealth of applications you've developed for them, I can appreciate the challenge your drawings had to tackle. Still, knowing how long ago you developed these techniques, the book is long overdue but the arsenal will be much the richer now that these techniques are available to them. As a result, I trust that you will now receive the recognition your creativity and skills have earned. On a more personal note, I want to congratulate you, my friend, on the completion of this project. I know the machinations you went through while you held this book as a goal. Your chest may justly swell with pride and you can breathe a huge sigh of relief; it's done. (Frankly, I don't know how one could do both at the same time, but if anyone can do it, you can.) Now, if we can only get you out there to lecture on the material, perhaps the community will come to appreciate that you are not only a brilliant creator but a skilled practitioner as well. I hope you will enjoy you week as Guest of Honor her at the Café', I know I enjoyed mine, and I wish you great success with the book. I hope and expect that being the Guest of Honor here at the Café' will be the beginning of the accolades you'll receive for your efforts. All the best, my friend. Wesley James |

Tom, do you have any plans for a book with your coin work?

Re coin magic. Yes...depending on how much card material I want to include in the next volume. I may balance the contents with cards and coins. Only time will tell. Thanks for asking.

Hi Tom,

Thanks Wesley,
It was a pleasure work to work with someone so knowledgeable. You are at the top of the field—not only as a writer, cardician, and historian, but as a friend. Most magicians are unaware of the fact that Avant-Cards were in the hands of numerous writers, and was dormant, until you took on the herculean chore of authoring the book. And what a chore you did. Without your assistance Avant-Cards would still be on my wish list. Thanks my friend. |

Tom, my copy came in today and I'm struggling to stay focused on today's work chores when all I really want to do is dig into Avant-Cards. Congratulations on this grand achievement!

Hi Chet,
Thanks for the kind words. Perhaps one of these days we will team up (like we did on the Stars of Magic series) and do a project. It was good to see that you are back into the swing of things. |

Wow.. I just received the new publication, Avant-Cards. I'm really impressed. Everything is produced First Class. The dust jacket and the book cover are extremely artistic and superbly done. The illustrations are impeccable and they are numerous. It's a treasure to have such a wonderfully produced book. Even if the book weren't so nice, the material inside it is top notch. I know that because I have seen Tom Gagnon perform many of these effects at conventions over the years. So not only is this a class book, but it contains killer stuff. I congratulate Tom Gagnon and urge any serious card worker to get this book while it is still available.

Hi Harrison,
I am glad that you enjoyed the book. As you know, I try to do the that I can best-no matter what it is. And working on the book was actually fun. Thanks my friend. I'll be seeing you (and Randino) in Buffalo at Danny Block's Close-up Convention. |

Hi John,
I have followed your career for several years—mostly on the TSD. That said, you have certainly caught my attention for being creative with the pasteboards. Keep up the great work. |

Here, Harrison, myself, and Wesley are in a stunned condition . . . bowing to the incredible Wizardry of Tom Gagnon. It is invariably unseen and unsuspected. Tom Gagnon is equally skilled at not just Avant-Cards, but also Avant-Steak, Avant-Dessert, Avant Peanut Butter, and Avant Donut. |
