I don't really need methods, I know too many methods.
I am more interested in routines. Using a search engine has not turned up much due to the often incorrect use of the words die, and dice. (Also “die” returns mostly die box routines.) Is it really that exciting to say: “Select a number on the die, don’t let me see it.” Then, revealing the chosen number. (Maybe it can be made strong enough through presentation?) Adding an envelope that shows you knew ahead of time what number they would select is somewhat better. Having 3 or 4 members of the audience each select a number on the die? Then you let each person in order know the number they selected. (The odds make this look harder.) I am asking this question to get some ideas that I will evolve into my own routine. (For the last couple of years I have found I have not interest in copying anyone else’s routine.) (Maybe this is just a phase.) A big part of the fun of all of this is writing a script and trying out new ideas and then evolving the routine based on what happens in the real world. (It becomes very, “me”) Thanks in advance
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

Bob Cassidy uses one as part of a "Mental Epic", which makes sense since a 1-in-6 isn't really enough by itself. The other two phases also have gambling/gaming themes.
He also has a "test conditions" routine for die-cypher in Artful Mentalism. |

You might also want to look at my "black lipstick" routine in The Artful Mentalism. It uses a single, unprepared die also works well in my three phase Mental Epic gambling effect.

Line up six objects.
Have a list of six items made (maybe have the list made on a "special" pad). Instead of talking about numbers, talk about the "dots" on a die. Use it to generate a "random" lock combo... I love using a die because it is an organic/classic mechanical "number generator", but I usually use it to randomly generate something other than just the "number". The "number" represents something else... so many applications...did you know the top and bottom number always add up to seven? I love using a die or dice, but I never just "guess the number rolled/selected". Hope all that made sense and was helpful.

I remember David Meade doing something with a dice , where the spectator picked a number on the dice then hid it under a cup, he divined the number , did it a few times , like a coin in hand routine. Used a psychological premise to the effect which I liked, I tried to find a clip of it but had no luck

Hello, Lost in Thought & Bob
Hey, I’m starting to get the hang of mentalism. The Artful mentalism was in my “basket of books to purchase before I started reading this thread. (Really.) BTW is The Artful Mentalism available as an ebook? (Haven’t found it at my normal “ebook” hangouts.) ~Cicero - Makes sense and was helpful. I am doing some experiments in this area. but I don’t want it to become too convoluted. Dean - If you happen to run across the clip please post. Thanks all - David

The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy is a hardcover published by H&R Magic Books. It is technically out of print at the moment but there are many dealers who still have copies available.

I believe the actual routine is printed as part of the Principia Mentalia, which you can find as part of http://www.lybrary.com/cassidys-mentalism-p-206.html, if you preferred an ebook.
"Artful Mentalism" reprints "Art of Mentalism 2", "Principia Mentalia" (both in the above link), "Theories and Methods of a Practical Psychic", "Strange Impressions" and "But Stranger Still". The first three I feel are essential, and the book is well worth tracking down in any case. I hadn't realised that it was out of print. |
