Hi I have just bough Compleat Invocations Vol 1&2 and I am still waiting on it to arrive.
I have numerous questions but first down to the dollars and cents question. I have acquired a signed First Edition book written and inscribed by one Tom Palmer from 1960 so I suppose I am asking you this. If I were to sell this item after reading how much would be a realistic asking price? Tom Palmer of coarse as you all know better than I is one of the lives of Tony Andruzzi My last question is how much of the Andruzzi persona is an act and how much of his persona was real? Thanks for any help and advice on any and or all of the above mentioned. Regards, Kyle |

Can't answer the dollars-and-cents question. As for the Tom/Tony question, here's a review by Joshua Kane in the August 2011 issue of M-U-M about a book you'll want to read:
"Unspeakable Acts is this year's guilty pleasure read. It is a witty and salacious roller coaster ride through the life of one of magic's most complicated and creative individuals; a man whose legacy has left three distinct identities for historians and friends alike to contend with, be confused by, and miss seeing at the bar or hospitality suite." "If there ever was a performer whose life was stranger than fiction and suited for a mad bio-pic, it was Tony. If it were not for the careful documentation of newspaper articles and references to primary sources included in the volume, no one would believe even half of the tales that have been collected and published." "Jim Magus, Terry Nosek, and Neil Tobin...are to be commended and thanked for compiling and editing so much material into a volume whose momentum and page-turning energy never flags...I thoroughly enjoyed the read and know that I will return to it often." Kyle,
It might help those in the know if you told them the title of the tome in question. (Say that 10 times fast) LOL! |

Thanks for the link to purchase. I spoke to Jim as the writing was still in process so I will definitely pick that up next paycheck.
The book is Modern Illusion by Tom Palmer First Edition Signed on First Page. Looks like a coffee spill or humidity damage on the front cover slightly still I got the book wanting to read it and when I opened it there was his signature. Thanks again for the response! Also on the list is a trip to Chicago to see your show Neil looks fantastic! I also found it interesting that although he had yet to turn to the Bizarre there were spook show like themes in the effects within almost a prelude to what was to come. Cheers, Kyle |

Also another interesting note and this is pure speculation on my part but I believe this to be a copy signed and from the collection of George Boston the stage manager of Blackstone Sr. show. As I said that portion is speculation because I am sure there are other magicians by that name still I think its a neat piece and I'm super excited I have something of Andruzzi by chance that was signed.

Just got Invocations first edition and it is wonderful may take years to absorb what is written in this massive book. Also received an Copy of Houdini on Escape and Magic signed by Bess pretty cool stuff.

My last question is how much of the Andruzzi persona is an act and how much of his persona was real? The Andruzzi persona was 100% an act and 100% real, all at the same time. He was a complex, incredibly inventive person. It was Andruzzi who inspired me to make the move to bizarre magic.

So the act became his life? That is a commitment all performers should make. The art world be better for it I feel.

The reason I drooped out of magic for some years was my disliking of the "I'm here to trick you" mentality. I am writing my show now and I am hoping people will watch and instead of think about the how of it all they will just sit and absorb the art of it the beauty and mystery that leads the flames of their souls into places only reached in REM. A communal journey into the fantastic.

Kyle,
I see no problem with performers separating their performing personas from their daily lives, so I'll have to disagree with your statement that this is "a commitment all performers should make." While it is part of what made Tony a fascinating human being, it came at a cost. Read the book and you'll see what I mean. About your performance goal: I think it sounds fascinating. But let me give you a little perspective born of experience. As you work toward it, please remember that no matter how hard you try, there will always be audience members who hold themselves back from making such a journey. Creating context and prequalifying your audience by setting appropriate expectations can help. So too is a sense of humor to keep the ride from becoming monotonous. But ultimately, no matter how heroically you labor, some guests will come with you and some will not. Don't be disheartened or discouraged. Simply aim to take as many along as you can. When the stragglers are in the minority and you find you can engage the majority of your audience, consider yourself successful. Best of luck, Neil

Thank you for that Neil. I am so excited to read the book and thank you for taking the time to give me your experience. It is a blessing any time I am given the gift of knowledge especially from someone who has done something I desire to do, that's what makes The Magic Café so amazing. I appreciate any and all advice or guidance you offer and will apply it as I develop the show.

I see no problem with performers separating their performing personas from their daily lives.... My performance persona must, of necessity, be diametrically opposed to my actual beliefs. As a bizarrist, I "believe" in all sorts of superstitious stuff, spirits, reincarnation, religion, crypozoology, dark magic, etc. In fact I am completely devoted to scientific rationalism in my personal beliefs.

I am so excited just purchased Spiritus Magnus. I am rather excited. Also I decided to sell the book autographed at $75 dollars. That is a complete shot in the dark price if anyone is interested or wants to pay less or more ( I certainly would prefer more) let me know. This is the copy published by Palmer not by an outside publishing company.
