I recently performed a mailbag escape, complete with shackles, during a children's church service. However, I was approached
by several adults stating that it was inappropriate to be handcuffed and shacked. They stated that it looked like bondage equipment- however, I thanked them for their "compliments" and went on my way. Has anyone ever run into this "cuffed" issue? Thanks, AC |

Did you ask them why they know about bondage equipment? LOL
I've never come across it before, but you hear all kinds of crazy stuff from Christians sometimes. And I mean that in a loving way, as a Pastor. |

I'll assume they were well intentioned, and might have been witness to, or personally experienced, the debilitating effects that the seedier side of erotica can produce in a persons life. And it might just be nit-picky over-protection-ism. At what point do you, as a parent, draw the line of, 'this could potentially be hurtful to little Johnny's emotional health and moral upbringing?' If you bring a can of beer into the church for an object lesson against consuming alcohol, it can be argued that because the children like/adore you and you are holding a can of beer, then the can of beer is likable by association, no matter what words you might use. The memory of the image is more powerful than the words, thus "influencing" the children to like beer. I'm not saying its a great argument, just trying to explain where the parents you encountered might be coming from. Should you change your act because of this? Only you can answer that. If today's parents have had lived when I was a child I wouldn't have been able to enjoy all the violent images on the Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner show. (excuse me while I go listen to the voices in my head some more...) |

I suppose a person could play up the jail / prisoner angle, when presenting escapes. And there are lots of Bible references to being in prison. Paul and others were put in prison for proclaiming their faith. Some books from the Bible were written by people while in prison.

Should of asked them, "How do you know about bondage equipment?" (On the inside) (On the outside, be polite and move on.)

One time, I had a couple come up to me on a Sunday afternoon to ask me to stop teaching their kid that God loves them more than they (the parents) do. Let's see, Jesus was shackled. Paul and Silas were shackled, etc etc.
God forbid we shackle anyone in Church. Why can we Christians be so dang uppity and narrow-minded at times?

I've used handcuffs and a straight-jacket in Churches to talk about being locked in sin and needing Christ to release me. Never had a problem in UK or UAE.
