I have a summer day camp show in 2 1/2 weeks for a group of chidlren aged 6-8 year olds and thei teenage counselors. I was thinking of doing bothtell drawing board in the show. is that too many "puppet"like or similar rouitnes to have in same show? I was considering eitehr doing both routiens with teh taped routine or doing the bord routine with only action andno voice (other than my own) and the pre-recorded routinefor the drawing board. I would separate both routines with other routines. If you would only do one routine and not both, which one would you do?
Thank you for your advice and comments. Michael

Have you seen Jeff Dunham or Terry Fator? There is no reason that you can not use multiple vent acts in one show. I say go for it .....

I do both in EVERY show. I do ventriloquism with them but the Axtell recorded routines are great for non-vents.
There is no reason to omit either. They are not perceived by the audience as two puppet routines. The audience sees the bird as a puppet and the drawing board is an illusion. I would not do the magic drawing board action only. Think about the whole illusion. Your drawing has come to life. If it just has a moving mouth and moving eyes it will not seem alive but rather the audience will be thinking there is some interesting mechanical stuff going on rather than how funny that drawing that came to life is.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I will be doing the drawing board with the pre-recorded routine track and a bird puppet routine that uses only the bird's action and my voice without the voice/music track. I am concerned that the use of the two pre-recorded voice routines for both effects, "Art-O-Matic" for the drawing board and ""Rope Trick" for the bird, is not a good idea. Is it alright to use two pre-recorded voice/music routines in the same show if the two effects are seperated or should I do the art o matic routine and forget about the rope routine for the bird and just do an action routine with only myself speaking?
Thank you again for your help and courtesy. Michael

I see no issue doing both either. I do the drawing board in every kids show. And if I COULD do a convincing vent...it'd do that too. Good luck!

There's no problem having more than one puppet in a show, but I see where you are coming from on the recorded voice routines. I wouldn't want to have more than one of them in the same act, so your solution is far better.
My suggestion would be to get rid of the recording and try vent. Do you think the other vents on this forum are highly skilled at lip control? Because I can tell you for a fact that they aren't, me included. If you have the skills to manipulate the puppet to a backing track, ventriloquism will be easy.

Kimmo is on the button. Two taped routines would be a no-no. But vent is all about bringing your puppet alive. I have not seen Kimmo's lips move, but I will take his word for it. I know my lips move all the time, though I do my best. Just go for it.
I used to do puppet shows to a CD under duress when bookers insisted on a puppet show. But one day I couldn't face it, so I did the voices myself. It was a revelation. It was technically in every way inferior. The voices for my puppets changed all the time, there was no music, I missed lines. But the show was a thousand times better. Now I love doing puppet shows. Use both routines, but ditch the tapes. That's the way to go.

I agree with Tony and Kimmo. Generally I find even bad vent superior to using a recording.

Is it the consensus taht I should just ditch teh cd track routine and just do even a bad vent job for both the board and the puppet? Should I even try to turn my head while talking for the drawing/puupet or don't even try to hide it?
Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Michael

How about having both in the same routine. Have the bird draw the face and you stay between them.
One hand for each with a story line within itself. |
