They are not supposed to be "good judges" that are experts in all fields. They are supposed to play their roles in order to play the show to the masses.

After watching the three clown judges play around with a fart machine while talking to Brett I vowed never to watch again. I think it was a bad choice of an illusion for that show - it's a great illusion in the middle of an illusion show but not for AGT. They want fast and furious. Brett is a great performer, but I did wonder about his choice of illusion. The judges should bring him back due to their total lack of respect.

The judges are playing the "part" of judges in a show. One plays the part of harsh critic, one is a class clown, the other dispenses motherly love. The "judges" are the stars of a tv show disguised as a talent contest. Always been like that, perhaps even more so in he USA version. The goal is to earn ratings. If they can make life a little difficult for the acts backstage to create drama onstage, they do it. And vice versa. They aren't going to bring back an act just because judges were fooling aorund with a fart machine, producers likely consider that part of their job as performers. Often the acts are unwilling or unsuspecting participants. Producers cast and manipulate acts for dramatic effect to get viewers to empathize. I think the show is more about that than magicians, dancers,or singers.

Thank you Lebowski! I've been saying this for years and can't seem to get it through to some people. I always call then "judges" with quotes as they are simply hired to act like judges.
This pattern started for me with Chuck Barris and the Gong Show. The "judges" were all comedians and entertainers and the acts that were in the show were just something to give them material. If they came up with a funny line while watching them perform, they would "Gong" them just for the joke. That was their job to be entertaining. Yes, I did the Gong Show doing legit magic and missed winning by 2 points by an older lady who sang (badly) while she made pies. Yes, it was stupid but I knew the deal going in and had fun. There was no pretense of fairness or anything else. The goal was to be outrageous and fun. The current shows are much more sophisticated and subtle but their goals are the same. They cast the outrageous and people tune in. Yes, there are good acts on there but no one would watch if it was just a good talent show. The entire genre has become nearly a parody of itself now with the Family casting of the "Angry (British) Dad" (Piers Morgan, Simon Cowel, Nigel Lythgoe) the "Caring Mom" (Sharon Osborne, Paula Abdul, Mary Murphy), and the Wacky Uncle (Howie Mandel, Randy Jackson, Adam Shankman/Everyone else). Their job is to keep the show moving with interstitial spots that make the viewer entertained and also angry enough to take action which is the "call in system" which adds revenue to the show. With no conflict (judges who don't know WHAT they're talking about!!!) there would not be a strong call to action for people to want to vote and generate more revenue. It's simply not about talent, it's about revenue.

I think the point about flash is a good one. Brett's routine was a bit slow in the middle. I seemed as if he was marking time in order for the music to play through. There was a minor glitch with the picture not being fully covered at the beginning as well as a reveal on Marilyn's exit at the end. Wouldn't have shown up had the camera not been where it was at that moment...which means that most of the audience int he theatre didn't see it, but millions who were sitting in the one "chair" the camera was occupying did.
As for the fart machine...I THINK what happened there was that Morgan silently farted and Mandell had a fart machine under the desk to let Morgan know he'd been caught. My guess: Morgan has done this before. Don't think it had a thing to do with the act they were watching. Think Morgan's emission was particularly "ripe." I think Brett came off really great after the act. Relaxed, competent, professional. -Philip |

Tuesday night Wildcard show they are bringing back Landon and Seth who got axed in shows #2 & #3 of the Qfinals.
Let's hope at least one, or both of these guys can escape criticism, and go back in time to make their second chances count! They both have totally different styles so it will be really interesting to watch! |
