Lucy...we love you!

Thanks for pointing that out. She was a true comic genius, as was the underrated Desi Arnaz who changed the face of television and steered Lucy through the rocky shoals of the House Un-American Activities Committee.
There are probably quite a few contemporary female comedians who are as funny and talented as Lucy was. But without her, they would not exist. "I'm not funny. What I am is brave."--Lucille Ball

I have no idea what year it was, but when my friend got the first colour TV in the neighbourhood, he excitedly told me, "Guess what? Lucy's hair is orange!"
Of course on those early TVs her skin was a bit greenish too... John

I'd put a bunch of the comics who broke out on SNL up there--Tina Fey, Jane Curtin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nora Dunn, Jan Hooks, Amy Poehlor, Sarah Silverman, off the top of my head.
Then the sitcom queens--Mary Tyler Moore, Ellen DeGeneres, and Roseanne Barr, whose first show with John Goodman was terrific. Then the movie/stage folk--Lily Tomlin, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep (yes she's a wonderful comic actress IMO). And a number of reliably funny NYC theatre actresses who don't do much else than that and whose names are not well known outside that circle. (The more famous of whom would be say, Swoozy Kurtz, or Stockard Channing.) Oh yes, there's lots of talent out there. But they all owe a debt to Ms. Ball.

And most of them are aware of it.
Roseanne, I tried watching Roseanne. I couldn't get into her character and then she ticked me off when in an interview the interviewer tried to say she was "a modern Lucille Ball." and she responded; "Why don't we call Lucille Ball an early Roseanne Barr?"

How you could put comediennes like Nora Dunn, Jan Hooks, and even Ellen and Rosanne in a class with Lucille Ball, and not even mention Carol Burnett (Who is ten times better than any of those) is beyond me. |

Please don't forget Vivian Vance. She played Lucy's straight man for a long, long time.

But then this wasn't meant to be a definitive list I stand by Ellen and Roseanne though, and am willing to downgrade Poehlor, Dunn, and Hooks. I agree that Rosanne was right up there, especially business-wise. I believe she pretty much owned and ran that entire production. I think Ellen is queen of her own empire as well but I don't know very much about her.

I'm not saying they're not talented, or even (in some cases, at least), extremely funny. But it's like comparing a typical NBA all-star to Michael Jordan. Maybe they're funnier than 99.999999% of the people (let alone women) who ever tried to make anyone laugh, but Lucy & Betty are those "1-in-a-hundred-million" types hanging out at the extremest far end of the bell curve.

I think that one's accomplishments need to be seen in an historical context. If it could be said to be true that ******* is the greatest rock band of all time, that hardly measures up to what the Stones, and before them, the Beatles, accomplished. And all (and I mean this sincerely and philosophically) pales in comparison to what Elvis accomplished. Even if you don't really like Elvis's music, his achievement was GIGANTIC. Monumental. Elvis was the genius that made it all happen. Making comparisons is simply ridiculous. There *is* no comparison.
I think that when it comes to the rather new medium of television, Lucy took those gigantic risks that a real artist takes. It's not simply a question of paying our respects. Television comedy is to a large degree a creation of Lucille Ball. Her achievement in popular culture was GIGANTIC. Monumental. There simply is no comparison. Try to imagine baseball without Babe Ruth, or jazz without Satchmo, or crime novels without Raymond Chandler. I think it insults them to call them "pioneers", as if their accomplishments are only important because they got into the game early. No, these people MADE the game what it is. |

How could you possibly list all of the great that came from SNL and overlook Gilda Radner?

This is just personal taste, but I don't find Sara Silverman to be all that funny.
I think she's smart and interesting, but she's never made me laugh. I just find myself thinking "okay she's using the n-word ironically... next!" Lucy will always be a legend.
