Blueboy,
I'm not here to discuss beliefs. This has NOTHING to do what one believes or is capable or incapable of doing. A gimmmicked seance is not an authentic seance, and can not be authentic. Because it is gimmicked. I am removing myself from further comment. I hope my initial post will be of some use to the OP.

The table tippers offers a good overview of the Victorian occult. http://www.amazon.com/Table-Rappers-Vict......_sim_b_7 Servants of the supernatural mainly concentrated on mesmerism, but went through a lot of detail on seance work and responses of the scientific community. http://www.amazon.com/Servants-Supernatu......0&sr=8-1 The Arthur Conan Doyle histories of spiritualism are interesting to read. Doyle was a believer and discusses people who were debunked as if there powers had been real. Hydesville in history is again written by believer. It gives an overview of the Fox sisters and the movement that sprang up around them. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0......+history The first psychic tells the tale of Daniel Douglass Hume. Hume was an incredible man who probably achieved more in the seance room than any other accounts I've read. Excellent read. http://www.amazon.co.uk/First-Psychic-Pe......_sim_b_6 |

Thank you indeed Joshua! I'm an amateur historian myself and am currently reading Final Seance. Very interesting look at both sides of Spiritualism (Conan Doyle and Houdini)

I've been researching Bram Stoker who was friends with Doyle. During his years at the Lyceum Stoker became involved in London's high society. Amongst those he met was Arthur Conan Doyle. The two were distantly related. Stoker attended the wedding of Doyle to his second wife Jean Elizabeth Leckie. When Dracula was released Doyle congratulated Stoker, “I think it is the very best story of diablerie which I have read for many years.”
Doyle was heavily involved in promoting spiritualism and kept his belief despite so many of the people he promoted being exposed. From the Cottingley fairies through to the Davenports spirit cabinets he promoted them in some way. Stoker was interested in mesmerism and no doubt the two shared conversations on the subject. However Stoker was more wary of fraud. It has been suggested that Doyle tried to encourage Stoker to become a member of the Golden Dawn, but I've seen no proper evidence. Stoker was friends with many members, but I doubt he would have fitted in with his more sceptical attitude. |
