WERE I ABLE

Were I able to be a child again,
pretending at taming dragons
and saving damsels from their fire –
I would learn to do some magic
so that adults could remember too.

Were I able to be younger again,
concerned about image and peers
and what fee to charge for brilliance –
I’d perform magic selectively
for those who might appreciate wonder.

But doing tricks with playing cards
or ropes and cups and shiny rings
are never magic enough for me –
for I have conquered loneliness
and would vanish that from every life.

Were I able to be adult again,
accountable for raising kids
and proud community service –
I’d mentor that impossible
is from nay-sayers and perception.

Most of what we believe we need
are but illusions taught or sold,
to make us sad o’r what we have –
which makes us much less than able
to build on what we actually know.

Were I not tied to this wheely chair
with two good arms and clearer eyes,
I could do magic once again –
but if you listened close, my friend;
you know I’ve passed it on to you.

To truly know life, one must live life;
and see the magic in it all,
and share it with another soul –
I am more than able though choice
between “what if” and less than me.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst
