I originally posted this question on a thread in the little darlings section, but thought I should post it here too.
Based on suggestions in this forum, I have decided to make a square circle in the shape of a jack-o-lantern for use in a children's Halloween show. In doing so, I want to have a logical reason for putting the cylinder inside of the square. My idea is to make the cylinder look like the candle that lights up the jack-o-lantern. I could just paint the cylinder yellow and say it's a candle, but I think it would look better if it actually lights up somehow. Any suggestions? A suggestion that I received in the little darlings forum is to paint the cylinder fluorescent yellow and then use a black light to illuminate it. This seems like a good suggestion to me. Any thoughts? Does anyone know where to get a small, battery-powered black light that can be hidden inside the jack-o-lantern shell? |

Hokey,
Isn't that going to be an awfully fat candle? How about making the cylinder a "goody bag?" Perhaps it could be disguised with an actual "trick or treat" printed bottomless plastic bag. Sid

For the black light, you can try to find a money detector light which battery powered.
Or change a small fluorescent flash light with a UV fluorescent tube. The smallest money detector I have seen is on a Zippo kind lighter. Regards, Budi Ha Ha |

There is an excellent discussion on Halloween magic and the plans for a j-o-l SC here http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~roy/magictalk-wi......een.html Lots of good info here-- As for the 'logical reason' for putting the cylinder inside the square--don't run when you're not being chased. Don't make any reference to it, just do the effect and let the audience determine the 'logic' of it...if any.

Ray, you raise an interesting question. Am I running when not being chased?
I am trying to limit my use of props that look like props or if I am using an obvious prop, I try to have a logical reason for it (whether it's implied by my routine or stated as part of my patter). As much as I like the magic circle, it feels strange to put a cylinder inside a square to make something appear inside of the cylinder. Why can't I just put the cylinder on the table and make something appear inside? Why do I need the square? (Or vice versa). These are questions that I feel are in my audience's mind. How do others feel about this? Maybe I am running when not chased. That would certainly make it easier for me to construct my Halloween square circle. |

To be honest I never thought of the 'logic in doing the square circle until I read your post. I have always felt that we should perform effects without the "now I'm going to put the card in the deck" kind of patter. Some may not agree with me but I like storytelling when doing an effect. Or nothing. As for the square circle, this effect could be done quite well silently, with music as a background. Of course everything we do is personal preference. That's what makes it all so much fun.

Since this is the workshop, can I ask what thoughts you guys have on constructing or finding the circle part of the square. I'm having problems finding a cylindar of the right size.
Thanks. Jim

Check out your local plumbing supply ( big one that plumbers use). They may have short drops (cut off ends) of mid to large plastic or PVC pipe.

Mailing tubes? I used a Quaker Oats canister once.
Another random thought, you could color part of the inner can yellow (like you thought) to show thru, and the part that sticks up above the square green for the stem. You could make it a monster instead of a pumpkin maybe. s |
