What are some tricks that use a stripper deck? I recently bought one and the instructions only include a couple of okay tricks, and I was hoping that I could hear a couple more from other magicians who use the deck regularly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've written two books of original effects and handling techniques for the stripper deck and been in a DVD of one of them!

I never use the Stripper Deck for any card tricks except for one... OUT OF THIS WORLD (OOTW), by Paul Curry. It's great because you can shuffle the cards and show all to be mixed up and then right under the spectators' eyes, you separate the reds and blacks and you are all prepared for OOTW in, literally, a SPLIT SECOND. It is super!!!! I am not a big fan of Bicycle Stripper Decks... They are not precise and, thus, not reliable. David Blaine has a Stripper Deck that I absolutely love and is EXTREMELY RELIABLE!!!! And it is under $10 per deck. .
You know how to make God laugh?........... Tell him your plans!!!

Just thinking aloud, you could partially stack it, for example, with just the stack turned, and throw it as the first packet in an overhand shuffle, then cut it to the top before beginning an OOTW routine. |

HI I am new just got a stripper deck and it's unusable :-(
I bought one 20 years ago and it's been great fun to use all these years but was getting tatty. So I wanted another deck, was shocked how many gaff decks you can buy and the amazing tricks so bought about 10 decks lol. Sadly the quality is very poor and the stripper deck unusable. What was strange is all the gaff decks were seal broken, is that normal, the 4 normal decks I got were sealed. All Bicycle 809 decks btw. |

For those of you with 50 posts or more, I will be referencing some EXCELLENT stripper deck stuff by the great Victor Farelli from a column in Hugard's Magic Monthly very soon.
Also, and this is for everyone, The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, edited by Jean Hugard is a veritable gold mine for these effects and just about any other you can think of and it is a STEAL from Dover. Interesting bit about the stripper deck: Dai Vernon apparently once ran a challenge for magicians to create a way to reverse the deck that looked natural; he hated almost every one of the solutions I have to agree with bblumen on the use of a stripper deck for OOTW. There are versions of this effect where the spectator DOES shuffle a regular deck of cards. The problem as I see it and I think bblumen sees it (I am not assuming anything; he is an intelligent man and may be thinking of other reasons) is that a stripper deck becomes or can become a case of the "Too Perfect Theory" whereby the only possible explanation is ALSO the CORRECT one. I think you will like Farelli's work with a stripper deck. It's a fascinating study and the references from Hugard's Magic Monthly will be up soon in Secret Sessions under "Classic Periodicals." It could be however that someone will beat me to the punch and post them here. That's cool too Ahimsa, Vlad |

Salby is using this tool where it is not necessary. If the performer is going to shuffle the deck to show "all to be mixed up", there are far better ways to accomplish this. And, even using a stripped deck for this purpose, Salby's method is not original and occurs at precisely the wrong time. For a truly "super" way to utilize the stripper deck in OOTW, see Ed Marlo's Subconscious from Racherbaumer's Sticks and Stones, Volume I Number 1.

I don't think Marlo's 'Subcoscious' is better than the way Salby-san mentioned.
In 'Subconscious', magician does darty work just before showing the climax. In the way Salby-san metnioned, the dirty work is done before main part of the trick begin. And the main part is done just as Curry's original way. However I prefer John Kennedy's 'Red and Black' to use Stripper Deck. I separate the deck and hand each half to two spectators. This is the way I advised Mr.Maric (Japan's No.1 magician) and he performed it in his TV show with a great success. (He used Belly Stripper though). Hideo Kato |

I've got a bicycle stripper deck which came straight from the factory, this is a fine deck. Nothing wrong with it. I also once bought a self made deck (bikes also), which is not good at all. So having a 'bike stripper deck' doesn't mean you have authentic one.
What's good about David Blaine's deck?

Kato-san,
I have to disagree with your analysis of Subconscious. In the Marlo effect, the participant gets to spread through the deck to "absorb" them. He sees a genuinely mixed deck. In addition, he is unaware of where the trick is going. He is merely trying to deal two nearly equal piles. The strip out occurs when there is no suspicion on the packets. The performer is only commenting on the interesting possibility that 26 cards were dealt into each packet. When the deck is spread for the finale, magicians are as fooled by the red/black condition as the lay people. Brian

Personally, I think you should use the method that suits you best for the effects you like the best to become the best you can.
And I NEVER strip out cards (how's that for a contradiction!). |
