I think it's a lot safer to perform on the sidewalk.

It was predicted, back in 2004 - here's the prediction:

And here... There will be riots over youth club closures.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jul/29......bs-close

The government would have to be fools not to see it coming..... oh wait...

http://m.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/sep/15/t......=article

Anyway... back to the topic...

I'm pretty sure there can be such a thing as "theatrical" street mentalism. i.e. Staged on the street either for filming or as a promotional stunt. Do blindfold drives and hunts count?

I don't think I'd want to do the effect the OP mentioned though. The dealing of cards and laying down of money might be a tad fiddly with our blustery weather.

Yes as I said above most close up and parlour magic and mentalism routines can or could be performed just by stepping out the door, so I don't see a need for a subcategory of 'Street Mentalism', apart from, trying to make it look cool to the young.

All manufacturers who want to sell things to teenagers, just tag the word 'Street' onto whatever they want to sell and it works.

I'm so sorry for the poor explications of the term "street mentalism"! .... and I try with my poor technical english to explain you Smile
This term is, for me, and just for my mind is very explicit ...
I call street mentalism, all the effects I can do with as less as possible material. Just use deck cards, business cards, dices or just sharpie and paper!
All this "materials" can be put in pockets and use for a trick in a ... STREET !
In fact, Street Mentalism is Close Up Mentalism without a lot of equipment.

For the moment, and in this magical "configuration", I use:
> marked deck card
> killer pro elite by Andy Nyman
> coin with 2 differents values (10cents €/5cents €)
> and a prediction of Tic Tac Toe with prediction like photo on my phone

I hope it's, now, clearer Smile

I think you would like:

Invisible Deck
Stacked deck tricks (Richard Osterlind has some great ones in his breakthrough card system book)
Billet work (heh heh)
Mind2Mind by Marc Paul
Unexpected DVD – Marc Spelmann and Peter Nardi

It's worked in other fields too. Look how well maps sold when they added "street" to the tittle.
I can't see street mentalism taking off in the UK. Anyone who wants to spend time on the cold wet streets isn't going to convince anyone that they have superior mind powers. I think about the most psychic street thing you could do is predict you'll need a brolly.

I agree and would think the same thing but the whole Street Hypnosis movement seems quite strong in the UK, actually more than anywhere else.

Having seen a few videos of street hypnosis I can't see it taking off in my area. I reckon you'd probably end up getting punched and that'd be getting off lightly.

Anyway I'm ok to be hypnotised but only by you master Anthony Jacquin Smile

"Just use deck cards, business cards, dices or just sharpie and paper!"

That's most peoples entire act! Yet they don't call themselves 'Street'

Using little or no equipment used to be called 'Impromptu' in my day.

Wow... I haven't seen so much equivocation since Max Maven's last DVD!

For what it's worth, I'm a street performer and I do a mind-reading act.
I know of two other guys (one in the states and one in europe) doing something similar.
So it's possible, but I won't say it's easy.

big hugs all 'round

Dave-

For the record, when I deride so-called "street magic/mentalism" I am not referring to legitimate street entertainers like yourself. I'm talking about the "ambush" style of magic whose practitioners accost random strangers because they think it's "cool".

I'm so glad you added this reply Bob,
As you're no doubt aware, it is a distinction which once upon a time I had some difficulty making elsewhere on this site.

David blaine ruined the art of street entertainment. street magic is even here in the Café a separate section. shame! I was in blackpool attending the lecture from mario morris and some kids magicians said to each other:"i think this is a different kind of magic you can do on the streets". I turned and said this is the the real street magic. they looked confused.

mentalism on the street is possible but you have to make it visable. I do a memory routine (not bob cassidies which is suitable also)and people like it because it involves 4 people holding cards (saw the routine from fred kaps).

if you do some mind reading write it down on a big board so they can see what you do. make it visible. chair prediction is a perfect finale trick. easy to follow / visible / 4 people. use bigger props - use people.

I did a serial number mindreading effect. I read the mind - write it down - showed the board -they said it was all right. I do 3 numbers then pass the bill through the audience - do another 3 numbers and repeat again the procedure. this way I read the minds of 3 people. the last one is the spectator who gave me the bill.
