Just returned two days ago from London and it is huge news there. We were only a couple of miles from the Tottenham riots and we received a letter from our hotel recommending that we stay in during the evenings. While we saw no rioting directly, several shops in County Hall (South Bank) closed early as a result of the impact on their employees. The last day we took a ride on the London Eye (which the government recommend closing early) and saw the smoke still rising from Tottenham.
It is not just London, as mentioned Birmingham and Manchester also have had extensive rioting. The general population appear to be horrified at the level of violence and general anarchy, but they also condemn the actions as pure criminality possibly coordinated/instigated (through social networking) by organized criminal gangs. There have been organized groups of residents in areas affected attempting to form civil protection/cleanup groups in response. ajp |

I have a martial arts website, and I've posted here (http://bigstickcombat.com/posts/is-britain-gone/) and several other places on the subject of mob violence both in the US and the UK.
I would hesitate to say that the austerity cuts caused rioting, lest you justify animal behavior. With this line of thinking, any cuts in government programs, including those necessary to keep the country solvent, justify mayhem in the street. I find it hard to see how a cut in a government program, say medicaid, causes me to go into the streets. knock an innocent kid off his bike, kick him when he's down, sock him in the jaw, breaking his jaw and knocking out several teeth, then rifle through his backpack as I pretend to help him up and steal his possessions. As for the Sikh, they are a warrior religion specifically designed to counter the Muslim invasion of India. To this day Sikhs are overrepresented in the Indian military and security professions. I've liked and admired the Sikhs I've known in the US. Threatening a Sikh temple is NOT like threatening the Anglican church, where some soft-headed chump will try to empathize with you. |

I received an email from Sir Robin Wales, the elected Mayor Of Newham where I live in East London which was a centre of some of the trouble, on Monday Night at 9:30pm while the chaos was still going on. He writes that the public disorder was pre-planned and he writes that Newham Council CCTV Operators were asked to follow the trouble makers on their cameras to get good images of them. And even if they had their faces covered the camera operators were asked to get images of them until they eventually uncovered their faces and went home.
The CCTV stills of the troublemakers are all very clear because many of them didn't have their faces covered and much of the trouble took place in daylight as it doesn't get dark here in London in the Summer until after 9 at night. Most of the trouble in Newham took place early evening on Monday. All week the Police have been releasing images of those involved and arresting people and the Courts have been dishing out some very stiff sentences. I went down the High Street today and there were police looking everybody up and down including me looking for faces they had seen on Monday night. It looks like a lot of people will be going to prison for what happened on Monday night. Just to update you on a few other things: - A man has been arrested and appeared in Court for the robbery of the Malaysian Student who was knocked off his bicycle, lay injured and was then robbed in Barking, East London. - Two men have been arrested and charged relating to the shooting of the man who was shot and died in South London. - A man has been charged with murder for the hit and run incident that took place in Birmingham, West Midlands where three men were struck and killed by a motor vehicle. The Police are currently seeking more witnesses to come forward. - A man has been charged with the murder of the elderly man who was beaten when he attempted to extinguish a fire that had been started outside his flat in Ealing, West London. I hope that updates you. Its not all bad news. Victoria. |

I'm glad they caught those guys, and that the kid with the backpack is being helped and recovering.

I read in a variety of newspapers (here and U.K. based) that the initial days of riots in London were worse than would have ever been expected under "normal" circumstances, because a few weeks before the top two people in the Metropolitan Police Service (for London) had resigned. And, basically, there was no effective new leadership yet in place.

Gdw- yes, and I heard BART management averted a planned protest of this by blocking cell phone service across the system.
The BART police are not exactly known as being overly competent lately, and they're doing little to improve their reputation.

Yes, they cut service in the subways I believe, though I thought I had heard it did not exactly prevent the protest, and also, not surprisingly, at least not to anyone beside the "authorities," it is encouraging more protests.

Irregular activity will be the prevailing theme of the period out to at least 2020, based on grievance, resentment, perceived inequalities and legacy mythologies and characterized by terrorism, insurgency, serious criminality and disorder. So our leaders promised us in 2007 and as you can see they always keep their word.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
