As far as I know it is an original idea which means that it's off limits to duplicate. If it is published somewhere that's different. Maybe someone else will have seen it but I haven't.

Ray..
I'm not sure how a remodel of a Zimmerman base could be an original idea... you can clearly see the fabric on both surfaces. I don't think that even a Zimmerman base was all that original.. adding a table to a standard base doesn't really change the effect.. or the method.. and he made pretty good money for a while charging people for that idea. How many years did that take to become community property? |

Lol... well... My point wasn't that it was a great idea or even that original but only that I hadn't seen anything like it commercially available so I wouldn't copy it, instead prefering the OP to come up with something else. BTW... I still call it a "Wakeling Base" and I just never thought that shoving a sub trunk under a table counted as a Wakeling base but I can see the similarity. I just always considered a Wakeling base a dedicated double table design, and I certainly don't consider it community property although it seems many do.

Ray is correct. the original stacked table design and concept was created by Alan Wakeling.
I seem to recall he built it in his living room! It was bought and paid for by Dick Zimmerman, and Dick licensed it's use to various performers over the years; inc; Henning and Copperfield. Things got 'sticky' when it was described in Genii Magazine by Paul Osborne in his long running series and Dick didn't actively address that issue. Now that it was in print.... for free (virtually) were fees still due to Dick? And so it begins... Regards- JNeal

Seems like Osborne got into a bit of an ethical jam on a number of occasions with that Genii column, and his publishing biz. I feel like he put himself under pressure doing a monthly column and started using unauthorized ideas disguised with his own cute and sometimes clever decorations. I also think it's possible that the reason many of his plans were not drawn to scale is that he never built them. Anyone ever get the impression that sometimes he thought audiences wouldn't see something just because you painted it black?

I always enjoyed the column..if mostly for the illustration; kinda' like the James Hodge illusion books.
With Osborne and other columnists of the day (but not necessarily in Genii) , I definitely got the impression that the material was never audience tested. As for the black paint, well the old adage isn't true: it doesn't cover a myriad of sins! JNeal

Lol... I remember with a particular illusionst, you could find any load on his props by just looking for the only thing that was black.

I knew an illusionist who was so clever, he didn't paint all of the prop...only the sides the audience saw....I wonder if that was to confuse those of us who were looking for the load?
Actually, I think he was inspired by "The Great Raymond" who did exactly the same thing! JNeal PS...see you at the castle tonight Ray!
