I am looking for resources (books and the like) for a presentation that shows mathematical skill. I am not after those thousands of tricks that rely on math but are themed about anything else. These are fun, too, but I am really searching for tricks show off mathematical power. So far I own two books from Martin Gardner.

Scott Cram's Grey Matters website has several such demonstrations. http://headinside.blogspot.com/
I also have some on my website, including instant mental calculation of roots, magic square, Day for any Date. http://www.mindmagician.org Also check out Arthur Benjamin's stuff. Mike |

Why not just compute the antiderivative of sec³(x) dx? That'd show some skill.

There's also plenty to check out in the Mental Gym, which is dedicated solely to tutorials and practicing of mental feats. If you're reading Martin Gardner, I'll assume you're already familiar with things like the Fibonacci Addition trick and doing cube roots in your head, so here are a few of the more unusual feats on my site: The Wolfram|Alpha trick - You have someone make up a random quadratic equation, and just from hearing 3 solutions to it, you work out the quadratic equation in your head! Dice Nim - Many people have worked out the math behind Nim and used it to win, but Dice Nim is a real challenge! Radians Made Easy Sine and Cosine Made Easy Day of the Week For Any Date in 2011 - Easier than most methods Magic Squares for the Mathematically Challenged - Bill Fritz' amazing and simple magic square routine...available exclusively on my site for Free! Mental Division With Decimal Precision - Divide any 2-, 3-, or 4-digit number by any 1 digit number, and give the answer with decimal precision! Also, there are a few good and highly unusual math tricks over at CuriousMath.com. |

I've heard great things about Harry Lorayne's Mathematical Wizardry:

Good recommendation, Magic Mike!
Since Edith is looking specifically for tricks that show off mathematical prowess, I suggest Alan Jackson's "Diabolical Divisors" routine, hidden at the end of a routine called "Another 'Combination'." It's a little known but powerful routine. |

Go to my new magic website (third one listed under this post, with the word "magic" in it) click on Magic Books and find MATHEMATICAL WIZARDRY, etc. Any questions, or even to order!, go to my personal email address (first one listed under this post, with the word "earthlink" in it) for answers. HL.

Don’t even bother with questions - just buy that book!
Seriously though, I love this book. Many of the effects/routines are also in other books but Harry makes the concepts so doggone understandable it's a joy to read! Thanks! Jim |

I Second J-Mac's post - Harry's book is THE book to go to - not only to learn routines but to learn basics that you will be able to build into your own routines that will be original and fun.

I also can recommend Arthur Benjamin´s book "Secrets of Mental Math" and of course my own take on the date magic square, the Stigma Square. Here a first review: http://headinside.blogspot.com/2012/01/r......3-4.html

Hi Mike,
very interested in your site. However, the link http://www.mindmagician.org does not work any pointers? WulfieSmith |

Hi Wulfie - thanks for alerting me to this. I am presuming that this is a temporary server error and that it will sort itself out before long (this occasionally happens). I'll keep an eye on it.
The link is correct. Mike |
