As Artie Johnson said "Veeeerlly Intelesting"
(Is that an old reference or what?)

Yes. And I'm old enough to understand the reference.

Thanks for the article, another interesting addition to your website.

I asked John today, at the Marvyn Roy/Mike Caveney presentation at the Sirball, if the writer said "there is no evidence" or did he say he could "find" no evidence that Houdini ever knew Dr. James Steeves.
John said this local historian said it as if it were cast in bronze. What a load of crap! If Houdini said he knew Dr. James Steeves, then, of course he knew Dr. James Steeves. As Ken Silverman said to me once: "Houdini knew EVERYONE!" |

It was more likely 1895, as Steeves was no longer in charge in 1896 and probably left the asylum.

Dr. Steeves had to retire from his position at the hospital in 1895 due to a cerebral hemorrhage, but, had significantly recovered by 1896.
I wonder if he was a magic afficionado? Great doubt was cast on Houdini's story about the escape from the Russian Carrette. It was true. Great doubt was cast on the Kleppini story. It was true. You can't throw the baby out with the bath water when you're researching Houdini--you'll never learn anything. You have to start, at least, assuming there's something to the story. And if you can't find what you're looking for, that doesn't mean it isn't there. The truth about Houdini is always amazing enough. Patrick Culliton http://www.houdinisghost.com |
