Ok so I bought the Dvd and I loved it. Ive watched it twice and have watched the practice sessions too.
So I thought id try it out on real people, and .... I'm sucking really badly. Im getting it wrong , spectators are getting it wrong. When I ask if I can try agian ( to get more practice) they kindly say "no" or "Show us that card trick instead? " or something like that. lol Has this happened to all who first learnt it? or am I missing something? please help |

Owen:
Just watched the demo reel. It was a little choppy so I didn't get the 'whole' thing, but.... I did a LOT of mentalism at one point in my career and maybe the following would help even though I have not watched the product itself. First, this is a 'type' of routine and working and I have a feeling that the manner in which the instructions to the spectators assisting is delivered is probably crucial. It 'seems' to me that it probably has to be very, very exact AND that the spectators MUST understand exactly what they are to do. For instance in the demo the liar much always 'lie', etc. What if that person is unsure of what he or she is supposed to do and they do the opposite of that directed? What if the are ambivalent about what they are supposed to do and they fudge or hesitate, etc.? Not sure if that matters, but these types of systems always seem to need a certain exactitude, etc. Also, I have a feeling from watching it being done that the performer MUST be very, very, very sure of him or herself in the performance. Personally, I don't care what the 'ad copy' says I have the impression that this takes some work with real people to get down and the problem is that once you have used one set of folks to practice you now need a new 'set' of folks. That sucks. I know what I would do..... I would go out where there are a bunch of people...say the quad at a local college during lunch time, or whatever. I would walk up to some folks and say, "Hi, my name is Owen Thomas and I'm working on a project for a psych class and I wondered if you folks would help me? Here's the deal, I'm trying to prove that I can 'tell' whether folks are lying or not...." You get the idea. Have a note book and take notes, etc. Just go around and hit folks with it. You may want to look up a psych class so you can give a teachers name, etc. I suggest the simple 'con', because I think it will leave folks in the best frame of mind to work with. If you tell them you are a magician or mentalist at this point it could bias the work. I'd hit as many groups as I could until I either started to get it right or realized that I am just not wired to do this particular routine. Good luck,

I have it also and I think practice is th only thing for it. This practice unlike most magic can only be done on real people and thus you are going to look a bit silly from time to time but I guess it comes down to how much you want to nail this.
Personaly its not for me but what an awesome effect IF you have the guts to work on it. Cheers DS |

Can this effect be done in a loud/roudy setting? for example a bar or club?
