What do you call those caps kids would toss on the ground and they'd pop as they hit? Maybe I'm just getting older but it seems like these were everyewhere just yesterday and yet today I can't find them. Does anyone know what they're called and have a source where I might find them?
Thanks, Dan. |

That’s interesting, the snap pops are a choking hazard, easy to dislodge, just throw the kid against a hard surface and it will dislodge the choking hazard and produce a gaping hole; just like magic

They were called "Torpedoes" during my childhood. That was about three thousand years ago. Came in a matchbook-size, cardboard box filled with sawdust. About three thousand years ago.

I thought they were a contemporary item until I started looking for them ... Then I suddenly started to feel a bit older as I guess they are now considered a bit nostalgic.
Thanks again for everyone's help. Dan. |

I know this information is now surplus to requirements but since we're all having a good old nostalge they used to be called "rio snappers" or "devil snaps" over here.
Sometimes you'd empty three into one to try and make a really big bang and it wouldn't work at all. |

I was looking at these one time simply becasue I can't snap my fingers. Thought maybe I could hide one in my hand and pop it to get the sound. Never had the nerve to put a mild explosive in my bare hand, though ....

I think I have heard them called Torpedoes too.
I've also seen them listed as Bang Pops. The only reason I could remember the name was: Someone gave our preschool about two dozen boxes the other day. The kids took them outside and poped them all in just a few minutes. The small kids were stepping on them to make em pop. A magician could place a few on the floor before the show. Remember the Bobby Traps? Haven't seen those in a long time but they had a string on each end that you pulled. We kids tied them to peoples door. Tom

There not called torpedoes, but theres this metal thingamabooby that looks like a little bomb with tailfins that you stick the cap into so you can drop them with more accuracy from a greater distance.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I remember them being called fun snaps. You can put them in a vanishing cane and they will bang on the floor as the cane vanishes.

Nice tip Mr Phil!
I remember those bomb things too, I used to put caps in them, never thought about putting snappers in them. Yeah, I recall them being called fun snaps aswell. |

Funny thing about those snaps. In the late 70's I was working in magic shop in San Jose California. We carried them. Fire Marshall came in and confiscated our entire inventory of them, as well as other merchants in the county, stating that they were a fire hazard. I suppose if they were thrown into a dry weeded area, they might have started a fire. But for years, did not see them around, then suddenly they were available again, so maybe the mafrs redesigned them so they were safer, I dunno.
